60 GiB iPod Photo often goes into 'deep sleep' (not standby)

Hi all,

My 60 GiB iPod Photo will often go into 'deep sleep' mode (not standby) when not used for a given period of time (I don't know exactly how long, but I'm guessing more than 24 hours).

By deep sleep, I mean that hitting either the Play button or connecting the iPod to my PowerBook G4 will cause it to start-up with the Apple logo, instead of waking up to the main menu, as it normally should.

In addition, when I wake the iPod by plugging it into the USB port of my PowerBook, it won't complete the start-up process, but instead freezes when the "Do Not Disconnect" screen is shown. Normally, this screen flashes and the iPod mounts, but in these cases when the iPod is just waking from deep sleep, the logo does not flash and the iPod does not mount. I fix this by holding down the Play and select buttons simultaneously, which restarts the unit.

A workaround to this problem is to wake the unit manually using the Play button prior to connecting the unit to my laptop, but I'd prefer to find out what I can do to stop it from going into 'deep sleep' mode to begin with.

I'm running iTunes 6.0.1. The iPod is running software v1.2, which is the latest version according to the 2005-11-17 updater.

Thanks in advice for all responses! 🙂

Your iPod going into deep sleep is a normal function to prevent the battery from draining even when the Hold button is active. Mine will do this afer about 36 hours when on Hold. I don't have the problem of it freezing when connecting to my G4 when it is in sleep mode - it powers up and mounts normally.

Doing a Reset or Restore would be the first troubleshooting steps.
