Windows won't configure iTunes

I have spent about 15 hours trying to get iTunes working properly and I now can't get past the point where Windows says its configuring iTunes. It will not progress any further no matter how long I wait as Windows is not able to configure. Can anyone shed some light on how to overcome this?

Hi not ok computer,

If you would read thru the threads, lots of people are having this problem, so you are not alone. I need to know some more info from you,
I need to know which Service Pack of Windows XP you have
Which firewall and antivirus program do you run on your PC
when you go into your processes tab, do you see both iTunes and Quicktime
If you do, do they stay there or do they go away after a few seconds?

Rachyl (or anyone!), will you please help me?! You seem to be so knowledgeable and I'm desperate!! I had an iPod nano set up with no problems, then I tried to add an iPod shuffle and it will not bring up iTunes at all and it doesn't seem to be recognized at all. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the software (directly from the Apple website), but nothing is happening. When I plug the Shuffle into the USB port, the amber light blinks continuously and iTunes never opens. I can open iTunes manually, but the Shuffle is not listed as a source. HELP!!

hi dina,

you know, my shuffle is behaving the same way when I hook it up to one of my Mac's, my iPods connect fine. So, I don't think its iTunes, but the software for the iShuffle. Check in your processes tab and do you see the iPod software for the shuffle. I think it could get confusing since y0u manage a Nano on that PC as well.

I've owned a 40 gig ipod for like a year, and itunes and evrything has worked fine. I just got the new 30 gig video ipod, and after installing the itunes disc, which upgaded me to itunes latest version i haven't been able to open itunes. I get a quick flash of a user ageement and then it disapears before I can even click on it.
I've read post after post, visited the apple site countless times, and I even called the ipod company, and still no one has been able to help me.
I shut off all firewalls-i think ( i have norton, and some pop-up blockers ) Im not sure if windows has its own firewall
I downloade ewidos to get rid of malware
I've reinstalled and even downloaded itunes from the sight.

If anyone can help me so I can enjoy season 1 of Desperate Housewives on my ipod, I will be eternally grateful and impressed.

So, do you have Quicktime installed on your PC? Have you configured Norton to allow iTunes and Quicktime to see if it will open? Check and tell me if Quicktime is installed because iTunes will not launch without Quicktime. Looks like you have done your homework, which is good. You eliminated some other causes for me.
Post back and we will go from there.

Quicktime works great, well not now cause i deleted it in one of my many attempts to fix things. i can throw the disk in and get in back though. I turned off norton auto protect still still nothing.

try configuring Norton to allow iTunes to open
Turn NIS 2005’s Personal Firewall OFF, (turn it OFF Permanently until your ready to turn it back on) then click CONFIGURE. ( Might be a good idea to disconnect from the Internet at this stage)

Under the PROGRAMS tab remove any reference to Apple iTunes or iTunes or iTunes Helper Module or anything related. and reboot.

After coming back go back to NIS 2005’s Personal Firewall, click CONFIGURE. Under the PROGRAMS tab click ADD at the bottom, a SELECT A PROGRAM window will pop up. Add the following files one at a time, iTunes.exe, iTunesHelper.exe, QuickTimePlayer.exe, qttask.exe, QTInfo.exe. The last 3 are found in your Quicktime folder where that is in your system. Click OK. Turn NIS 2005’s Personal Firewall ON, and try starting iTunes again.

It seems the Quicktime files were never automatically entered into NIS 2005’s Personal Firewall allowable programs listing. Adding them manually should help. I also noticed that from my previous version of iTunes the program listed in the Firewall was named Apple iTunes and not iTunes after I upgraded to 6.

i have the 2003 Norton so i can't really follow your previous guidelines. I can assure though that I already turned evry possible protection thing on it off, and then I completely deleted it. prob unwise, but i did this before your last post. i was just reading that possibly my P2P program could be the reason cause the new itunes is trying to prevent piracy. what do you think?
