Disk Problems

It all started with problems with iTunes. I was getting the spinning beach ball every time I tried to use it. I eventually discovered a couple of folders within iTunes Music that were corrupted somehow. I'd click on them and after the beach ball would spin for awhile, they'd come up empty where they should have contained a couple of albums and songs each. I managed to drag them (with some effort) out of the iTunes folder and onto the desktop (I wasn't able to trash them). That messed up everything. On restart, the folder icons were no longer visible but the text below them was. I couldn't touch them and everything else fell apart. Upon another restart, the computer would no longer boot. I used my install disk to boot and tried disk utility to repair the disk. It first shows "Keys out of order - Rebuilding Catalog B-tree) but the repair ends up failing with the error "1 volume could not be repaired because of an error". I retried it a couple of times with the same error.

So, is my HD shot? What are my options? Is there any way to get in there and retrieve my data (I have most backed up but not all)? Should I try a new install?

Any and all help is GREATLY appreciated!!!!

Thanks.

Doug

I've tried running Disk Warrior as Barbara suggested. It claims to have successfully rebuilt the directory but I still can't boot into OS X. The gray apple shows up, a circular object with a spinning exterior shows up and my fans kick in big time. Then, nothing

When I preview the directories through disk warrior, the documents folder is empty, most of my applications are gone and I see no users in the users folder. Not looking good.

'd like to hear if there are any other options or thoughts prior to my trying to reinstall the OS.

Thanks
