Typing hash on Mac keyboard

Typing hash on Mac keyboard

How do you type hash on the mac keyboard as it doesn't appear as a key. I've heard its 'shift 3' but as I live in the UK thats a pound sign, so what key combination do i use?

On a UK keyboard the '#' is alt-3.
