Verbatim CD-R's not working on MATSHITA CD-RW CW-7121

Ok. I just buy 100 Verbatim CD-R discs to use with my iMac G3 slot loading, and this discs does not seem to be recordable on my MATSHITA CD-RW CW-7121 (this is the default internal CD-RW unit of the iMac)

The true is that I have similar problems with other CD-R brands like Office Max CD-R's, the first time that I insert this discs on the unit, they are detected fine, but as Toast or iTunes begins the process of recording the disc, an error is display, in iTunes the message reads as follow: "The attempt to burn a disc failed. The device failed to respond properly, unable to recover or retry." and on Toast the message reads as follow: "The drive reported an error: Sence Key = MEDIUM ERROR Sence Code = 0x73, 0x03" The second time I insert the disc and redo the action of burning the CD, there is no problem at all, except with the Verbatim CD-R's they don't seem to work at all, and sometimes, the burning process is compleated but the Verbatim disc does not seem to play on any CD player or CD-ROM.

The story is compleatly different with CD-RW discs, they don't seem to have any problem at all, I can read, write and rewrite this disc with no problem at the first insert.

Of course I try to see if the discs I'm using are not defectly, buy they seem to work fine on other CD-RW drives on different computers.

What can be happening? Does my MATSHITA CD-RW CW-7121 drive reach it's usefull lifetime? I have recorded many CD's on it, cause I have my iMac from almost 3 years now, but the problem seem to be happening ever scence I update to Mac OS X 10.3.5, can this be the problem? or I just have to clean the unit? if so... How can I clean it at home if the unit is slot loading? I check the ROM version of my iMac and I'm running the latest ROM version (4.1.9f1).

Any help? Thanks!

iMac (Summer 2001) 600Mhz RAM=384MB Slot loading Mac OS X (10.3.5) CD-RW, 40 GB hard drive, Slot loading CD-RW

Hello Rollvic,
The first thing I would do is to try a head cleaner. They make special cleaner disks that insert into the drive. This can be used on a slot load. Just look at the directions and determine if they will mount into your computer. Try local stores. In US, these CD cleaners can be found in stores such as CVS, Right-Aid etc. They are like pharmacies.......It is possible that the disks may not just work well on your drive or that they are defective. For that reason, I am hesitant to buy large quantity sleeves of CD's.
Try cleaning first then try another brand of CD, buy 1 or 2 ......HTH......Jim
