I recently purchased my brother's 20 GB IPod. Whenever I plug the IPod into my computer, my mac isn't recognizing it as an IPod. I have downloaded the latest update from Apple.com. Whenever the updater tells me to plug in the IPod, it does nothing after I plug it in. I have tried downloading the newest version of ITunes, but this did not help either. ITunes is telling me that there is no IPod connected. I was just looking for some help. Thanks.

Unfortunately this problem isn't uncommon and there is no single reliable fix, probably because it isn't one single problem. Some people find that their iPod will connect to one computer but not another. Some find that it won't connect to any. Sigh.

But here is one fix that almost always works: switch to the USB cable.
