Unable to install «.pkg» file

Hello,

I am unable to install «pkg» files. Does somebody have an idea to correct this situation ??? Thanks in advance.

Technically, they're installer files. BTW, does this happen with every .pkg file located in /Library/Packages? Open the Console.app in /Applications/Utilities, then open the console log and the system log and see if there are any entries that might provide some information. It might be that that Disk Utility might have some problems. If there isn't anything relating to your attempts, then try to reinstall the 10.4.3 combo update.

It happens with every .pkg file I want to install. I think this is since I have installed TIGER ??? The PACKAGE folder as to files : «iPod2004-11-15.tar» and «J2SE50Release3.pkg», I don't know what are these files doing there ....

I did not find any clue there .....

What Disk Utility ?? Do you mean the disk from wich I am trying to install the «pkg» file ?? If yes, most of the other «pkg» files where downloaded from the internet. All of these files seem to be not running since I have installed TIGER !!!!

A couple of thoughts:

- Check a .pkg file to see what app is supposed to open it. You can do this by holding down the control key and then clicking once on an icon for a .pkg file. You should get a menu. Select Get Info. When the Info window pops up, see what is listed for "Open with". Normally, the answer should be "Installer". If you have something different, I suggest that you select Installer.

- Delete your preference file for the Installer and see if that helps. The file is:

/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.installer.plist

Hmm, it would be good to see if you have the Installer. Look in Applications>Utilities. There should be an application there named Installer. If it is not there, you definitely have a problem.

If it is there, do a Get Info on it to see how big it is. When I do that, I get: 5.2 MB on disk (3,946,423 bytes). You should probably have the same size, although I suppose there is the possibility that we could have slightly different versions.

If the Open With window is empty and you can't find the Installer app in /Applications/Utilities, then, Rich RJ stated, you have major problems. In your shoes, I'd clone my installation to another disk/partition/volume, use the restore disk to erase and restore the HD to factory specs, then use the Migration Assistant to transfer everything from the clone back to the HD.

On any page of the DISCUSSIONS you can click either on one of the path items at the top of the pages or in your case on the DISCUSSIONS's link. You can also select the DISCUSSIONS tab under SUPPORT in any of APPLE's web pages.

The idea is to go to the discussion you want information on. Then you choose a category in this discussion. Then at the top of the category's page you should see a POST A NEW TOPIC button. Click there and post ... Good luck :^) :^):^):^):^):^):^):^):^):^):^):^):^):^)

Yes, there is an app called Pacifist which allows you to install one item from your installation disk.

I cannot give you a full recipe right now - basically, you have to get Pacifist installed, then insert your OS X installation disk and start Pacifist. You have to open Mac OS X install packages. Then, in the Pacifist window, you will ned to search for Installer.app. You may get more than one hit. If you do, the one that you want is probably the first one. Then, you would install that.

Hope this helps.
