Currency Symbol Shortcuts

I need to type foreign currency symbols, the degree symbol and some math symbols in documents, emails and spreadsheets. I thought I would be able to assign a key combination such as Option 4 for the English Pound currency £ symbol, or Option 2 for the degree ° symbol but I cannot see how to achieve this. I know I can open the character palette but this is very tedious... Any suggestions?

hey, thanks for that - i have used these before but forgot how to find them... i must admit i don't find the help files very useful for this sort of stuff. perhaps the developers assume years of Mac knowledge - but I am a recent convert from Windows... Any idea whether other symbols can be assigned or are we stuck with the ones Apple thought we might need?

Keyboard Viewer (using Shift, Option, and Option+Shift) shows you what is available for any given keyboard layout. If you need something else, you need to customize a layout using a tool like Ukelele:
