Is the other person you are face timing on wifi. That is normally the message you get when the other person either does not have the FaceTime app launched on a mac or is not on wifi with an iOS device.

The user is on wifi. It also failed when i tried calling someone that was using the iphone
Make sure the other person has Facetime enabled under Settings> Facetime.
Can those other devices FaceTime anyone else right now. Are all on the same wifi network. Also on a mac it is not enough to just be on wifi they need to have the FaceTime app open and configured with an email address.
Their settings are on
They are on different wifi networks with both their Facetime features working. Facetime on the mac is up and running. It's just mine:/ I saw something that said change the DNS to 8.8.8.8. Do I have to do that as well?
I'm having the same issue. Please don't let this thread die.
I have an iPhone 4 and a brand new MacBook Pro that came with FaceTime preinstalled. I try calling, via Facetime, between my iPhone 4 and the MBP and my phone gets an error message that says:
"FaceTime Failed
(My Name) is not available for
FaceTime"
I can call my phone FROM the MBP, I just can't seemingly receive a FaceTime call to the MBP.
Any suggestions?
Scott
I cannot call my husbands iPhone 4 on FaceTime and vice versa. On my MBP, it says he is not available for FaceTime. On his phone it says FaceTime failed. I'm lost! Any help please?
My partner and I both have iPhone 4 and even in the same room and both on wifi, he can call me, but I cannot call him. I keep getting that he is not available for FaceTime
After much testing and restoring my iPhone 3 times, we discovered the problem is not with my iPhone, but rather with the person I wanted to FaceTime with. The reason he could FaceTime me, but I could not FaceTime him, is because his number is unlisted.
My wife's iPhone 4 could FaceTime my iPod Touch but whenever I tried to FaceTime her from my iPod I got the the "FaceTime failed, user not available" message.
After much time, I have resolved the problem.
Make sure when calling the iPhone that you FaceTime its mobile number from your contacts list, NOT the iPhone user's Apple ID/Email address. FaceTime then successfully connects!
This is illogical since you are making the connection from the iPod wirelessly over the internet to the AppleID/Email address, not via the 3g phone network - but that's the only way it seems to work.
Thanks johnwelshpool, Your research is spot on!. When my nephew's Ipod touch places a FaceTime "call" to my Iphone4 it works. If the same Ipod calls the same iphone using my apple ID email address it fails. When I try to call from the Iphone to the Ipod - it fails. As you said - illogical.
I believe my situation is a little different bcs We are trying to go from iPhone4 to iPhone4. Same symptom, when i try to connect ...FaceTime is not available at this time. The person who is not available can FaceTime me. Since we are going from iPhone to iPhone, we are bother going through mobile phone numbers.
Just a long shot, but even though you are both going through mobile numbers, do you share the same Apple ID and email address?
If so, one of you may need a different Apple ID and email address - or at least a different email address since Facetime does allow you to set an alternative email address where you can be reached for calls.
I have a different email address set on my iMac (go to the FaceTime preferences pull down menu) so that it can receive and make FaceTime calls to my iPod Touch which shares the same Apple ID.
My wife and I both have iPhones. We moved and switched numbers. FaceTime stopped working until I went into Settings -> Phone -> FaceTime and then turned FaceTime off and then on again.
Works like a charm now.
I'm sure turning the phones on and off would have accomplished the same thing.
