I successfully used a third-party microsim while in Vienna. I bought via the WWW from a company called MAXROAM and had it delivered before I left the US. Getting the Microsim to work required a login (while in Austria) at the company's site to have the microsim registered. The particular company seems to have agreements for use of their product all over Europe, but as a result is probably a bit more expensive than buying a microsim in the country from a specific carrier. I switched back to my ATT card after landing in the US and it worked almost immediately. I kept the third party microsim for the next trip - I'll see how it works.

Hello,

I have had a similar experience to Johnfromsandiego. Having used a local carrier SIM in Australia (Telstra) I had no problems getting connectivity with my AT&T version. This was true of the iPhone and iPad. When I came back to the States, plugged in the AT&T SIM and off I went without a hitch.

There are no other GSM carriers in the States other than T-Mobile (at least for now) and a few other regional operators. You would have to trip down a T-Mobile SIM to try it out and frankly I have not done that myself.

Hope this helps,

The iPad and the iPad 2 are not locked. You would just need to find another GSM carrier in the country in which you would like to use your iPad or iPad 2 (if you chose the AT&T model) and get a micro-sim from them and a plan.

One easy way to check for the carrier in the country to which you are traveling is to pull up the Apple Online Store for that country (if it has one). Choose the country at the bottom of the Apple page and then, with the US site alongside to help you navigate (if you don't know the language), go to the iPad pages to see the listed carriers.
