Hdmi output resolution is not top notch! Why?

I have the 2010 mac mini and use it as a media center with a full hd tv (1920x1080). In my screen resolutions options (under system settings) I use 1080p, since there is no 1980x1080 resolution option when using hdmi. The standard 1080p option produces an image that is unable to fill the tv screen and is slightly blurred. I had an older generation mac mini before, which I plugged into the the same tv using a standard vga cable, and it filled the screen completely and produced a crystal clear and sharp image on the tv.

I am a bit disappointed at how the new mac mini performs over hdmi. Am I doing anything wrong, or is there a setting that can change things? Why, for example, can't I manually set the output resolution to 1920x1080? Any solutions?

I have a similar setup with the mac mini. I beleve you should look for the overscan adjustment setting in the display settings. 1080p and overscan adjustment create the correct screen size for me. From there, check your television's "normal, stretch, zoom-type" adjustments and pick based on your preference. Many tvs have a 'display' button that will inform you of the resolution and should confirm that you are playing 1080p content.
