How do I add a non-gmail gmail school account to Mail

Hello, my school recently gave my email to Google and now I have a google account. Even though I got the email account to work on the iphone, it does not work on apple mail. This email does not have the work gmail in it at all so I think that is what is causing the issue for the desktop version for mail. I match exactly what is in my iphone gmail type mail account but still does not work. Mail cannot connect to my incoming or outgoing server.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.7)

Have you enabled IMAP through Google yet? If not you'll need to sign into your Google account, using your web browser, and enable IMAP. That's probably why the incoming mail isn't working. The outgoing mail server should be smtp.gmail.com, so it doesn't appear you have that setup correctly. Reading this should help:

Those instructions are for setting it up as a POP account. It's the exact same steps except you need to enable IMAP through Google and set it up as an IMAP account in Mail.
