spotlight constantly indexing

Question

Help please. On my MacBook 13" aluminum with 4GB RAM and 250GB HD, spotlight is constantly indexing my drive. NO external HDs connected. I have wiped the Spotlight file and still Spotlight takes up 100% of Memory and the fans are running at 6000rpm (max) for hours. When completed, I restart my machine and Spotlight re-starts indexing my Mac. I need spotlight to find my files, so permamently turning it off is not an option.I have scoured the web, I have re-installed 10.6 Snow Leopard and various updaters, I have zeroed my drive and restored from TM and all to no avail.This laptop is one inch away from becoming e-waste!Does anyone have any NEW ideas about Spotlight soaking up all RAM and CPU constantly? While this is happening, nothing else can run (Word, Firefox etc) all hang due to a lack of resources. I bought the mac to work, not watch it work without me.

First, launch the Console application and select system.log from the list of logs. In the filtering text box, enter "mdworker" (without the quotes.) Do you see any error messages?Open the Spotlight preference pane and click on the Privacy tab. Add your startup volume to the list of locations that are excluded from searching. Does the indexing stop? Remove the volume from the list. Does it start again?Assuming the answer to the last two questions is "yes," the next step is to make more selective additions to the exclusion list until the indexing activity is tolerable.

Hi Linc. Yes to both!The commonest error message is &lt;path/file name&gt; then "could not be imported; Only a PPC importer plug-in was found."typically Word documents, but also appearing for font files and some in ~/Library/Application Support (lots of Adobe files listed)I can exclude L/AS files etc but the Word files are ones I need indexed, so will continue to fine-tune the exclusionsmany thanks for your suggestions/guidanceE

Spotlight relies on plugins to index files that it doesn&#x27;t natively support, including Word files. It sounds like you have an outdated plugin. First, look in the folder /Library/Spotlight for a file called "Microsoft Office.mdimporter". It should be version 12.1.0. I don&#x27;t use Office myself, so I don&#x27;t know what it installs, but you might have something in that folder, or in /System/Library/Spotlight, that conflicts with it.

The MS Office.mdimporter is version 12.1.0.I opened all three folders of Spotlight importers and there was an old Font.mdimporter that was PPC and 2005 in one folder and another that was 2009/Intel, so that may have contributed to the situation. I deleted the old PPD mdimporter plugin and  another mdimporter plugin for an app that was PPC.I will re-index my HD overnight tonight and see what happens, but I must confess to being somewhat pessimistic (but would love to be proven wrong!)the 3 Spotlight folders were in ~/Library, [HD]/Library and [HD]/System/Library.

Sometimes Spotlight metadata stores can become corrupted. The simplest fix is to launch Terminal and type the following command:sudo mdutil -E /Typing the above command will reset the data cache for your hard drive. Also note you will need to type login password to perform the above command.* I suggest typing the above command toward the end of the day as this will force Spotlight to re-index your entire hard drive from scratch.If you want to know more about what mdutil is before running the command, type the following for a semi-detailed-cryptic explanation:man mdutil(type Q to escape back out to terminal command).

thanks for this - I had cleared the spotlight index file in the past but this strategy of rebuilding the file didn&#x27;t help - Spotlight just kept chugging away..appreciate your efforts

ok, so far it looks ok! Spotlight re-indexed the drive overnight and is now silent! there were only a few error messages in Console referring to the indexing, so a preliminary/interim conclusion is that the presence of PPC mdimporter plugins maybe responsible for the problem of Spotlight constantly indexing an internal drive. I don&#x27;t know if they are responsible for the related problem of indexing external drives that is also widely reported.I suggest people who have problems with Spotlight, specifically the issue of constantly indexing the internal drive, look at the mdimporter.plugins in the three folders:  ~/Library, /Library and /System/Library to look for any PPC plugins that will not (can not) run on Intel machines. They MUST be Universal or Intel (check each plugin with command-I).It is also worth looking for multiple plugins for the same application that are of different vintages. You may also consider deleting plugins for applications that you are no longer running/no longer have installed.Hope this helps others

I&#x27;m having the same problem. WHen I installed Lion it took forever to index with my Macbook fan working hard and very load. Now a week later, Spotlight is indexing AGAIN and it seems while it&#x27;s doing that, the finder acts wierd and I get lots of spinning balls. Why is Spotlight indexing again?
