SimpleText alternative

I am trying to download a file, and after unzipping it Simpletext is not doing the job. I get a message that the file is too large for simpletext to open. Are there any suggestions to get this file to correctly open. All help is much apreciated.

Shawn,

Can we assume that the uncompressed file you're trying to view is plain text or rich text format ?

Anything else will need a dedicated program to view the file. It is unfortunate that SimpleText can be the default 'catch-all' for opening files sourced from the internet, which is what might have happened here.

There are more freeware / shareware text editors for Mac OS 9 out there than any of us have had hot dinners. Any one of these could open the file you've got, but again, it should be plain text or rich text format. You could even try to use Internet Explorer.

Shawn,

Unfortunately Simple Edit (like Teach Text) can't open even modest size files, and can only open plain text files. If this file was sent to you say from somebody using OSX and Text Edit, then it may be in a number of formats, including rtf.

BBedit Lite was a popular pre-OSX utility that let you open all kinds of text files. As Simon said, there's lots of them out there, though some may let you open just about any file with text (and also show you all the buried formatting codes) and some will just do plain text. Also, just about any word processor should let you open your file.
