Q: FREE iphone replacement

AMAZING DAY. Dropped my iphone 4 today and shattered the screen.  FREAKED out, went straight to the apple store. Walked in, and talked with a person that greeted me.  They told me it would be $200 for the replacement phone.  Told him what happened, and how i bought the phone full retail price, and i don't have any money and that it was my only phone.  I then sit down at a comp, and another lady that works there commented on my broken screen, so i told her my story, and she told me to make a genius bar appointment.  I made one for an hour later.  Sat there surfing the web, my name got called, and i told the tech what happened, and that i haev no money and really want a new phone, and after reading reviews, i saw that sometimes they replace the phone for free, a "one time" thing.  He said well today is your lucky day too, and then walked out with a brand new phone for me free of charge!!!!

YAY me! Good luck for anyone else who this happens to .  Just be honest and you should be fine

iPhone 4, iOS 4.2.7

You were lucky. Lots of people are honest and they still have to pay the out of warranty replacement price.

Think about why Apple would do that. Who is the first company you are going to think about purchasing a phone from in the future? Apple? How many different sites are you going to out and tell that story to? and subsequently how many people are going to go out and buy an iPhone or iPod touch?

You've just become an Apple's spokesperson, just by the service that Apple provides. It's why I only buy their products. I've had nothing but good service from Apple.

I too had a wonderful experience at apple today.

spilled soda into my charge port of my iphone 3gs.

    freaked out

went to apple store, in the middle of their black friday sale - complete chaos.

made an appointment, less than 5 minutes later my name gets called. an Apple genius looked at my phone after i told him what happened to it. he came back and told me they normally dont cover water damage, however since the censors did not go off they would replace my iphone 3gs free of charge.

my whole visit took 15 minutes and i walked out with a brand new iphone!

i will forever be an apple supporter from here on in!

Hontestly telling the truth has nothing to do with it . I have never lied about a thing and today I went in wanting to replace my phone because the touch screen was acting up and would not replace it for me . My warranty was expired a month ago and the guy started saying apple is trying to be " fair " by not replacing any phones that are past warranty yet they replaced phones everyday that are 2-3 years past warranty or in the worst condition . My phone was very well taken Care of . I have never replaced my phone ever since I bought it full retail price And it gets messed up where I can't even use it and they woldnt replace it . Apples service is very unfair . You pay hundreds of Dollars to buy " the best phone" and it gets messed up after a year . It's like they know the phone won't last and they just want to trick people just to they cant charge them 400$ after a year when they should be giving me better service. I Am definitely never buying another apple product again because Apple's ego is starting to get to **** big .

Yes I have a similar issue.

My first iPhone 6 plus 128GB lasted 8 months from new before developing a bluetooth problem. Apple replaced it. The replacement has now developed a touchscreen issue again after only 8 months rendering the phone totally useless. The phone is in mint condition but the only option Apple will give me is to purchase a replacement phone for £290. They refuse to lift the screen to check if there is a connection issue even though I have said I take full responsibility if doing it causes other problems.

The Apple Store have failed to respond to my latest email. Appalling customer service! The richest company in the world now intent on squeezing every last penny out of their customers.

I have been a supporter of Apple products for at least 30 years and during Steve Jobs reign everything was great including customer service.

    How quickly things change.

    Goodbye Apple Hello Android

    Goodbye Apple Hello Android

Do people even bother to check their warranty?  Apple is doing EXACTLY as it promised it would and as you agreed to when you purchased it.  Your iPhone had a ONE YEAR limited manufacturers warranty.  The first repair was apparently a warranty repair, and thus the replacement device would have continued the original warranty or come with 90 days coverage, whichever was longer.  Now, you are completely out of warranty, so your ONLY option is an out of warranty replacement for the price you were quoted.  Apple has NEVER offered in-house repairs of parts and such (other than, recently, screen repairs on certain models).  Their standard operating procedure has always been to replace units with fully OEM factory refurbished units In lieu of in-store repairs.

The service offered to you was exactly what you are entitled to and follows the normal out of warranty service from Apple.  It has been that way for years - you may even be surprised to know it was exactly that way even while under Mr. Jobs leadership.  Nothing has changed.  The out of warranty fee would have given you a service unit that would have been indistinguishable from new, and for a fee much less than actually buying a new replacement.  It would also have included a 90 day warranty on the replacement unit.  This is, and always has been, Apple's standard operating model for out of warranty iPhone service.

So a £900 iPhone has a working life of 8 months, and one is supposed to accept that. WOW!

No you obviously didn't read Michael's post. He told you that your first replacement was done at the 8 month mark. Your second one only had 4 months of warranty left and you tried to get another new phone after 8 months of having the new phone. That is a total of 16 months which is well beyond the original warranty period. No one is telling you to accept that but you must really be abusing your phones. I have had iphones since the 3G and have never encountered an issue where I had to have it replaced under warranty.

Nope, but yours had a problem, and you decided not to insure it through Apple, your carrier, or third party services.  This is a risk that you take.  It's unfortunate what happened, but this is nothing new, and was still like this "in the golden years when Steve was alive".

On my first visit to the Apple store the phone was having intermittent screen issues.

The genius told me I had 3 options.

    1. He could lift the screen to check connections but risk of causing more problems.

    2. Replace the screen for £79

    3. Replace the phone for £290

As the phone was working ok at the time I decided to carry on using it in the hope that it may right itself which it didn't.

On my return to the Apple store I was then told I had been given wrong information and my only option was to pay out for a replacement phone.

This is what makes me angry. All I got was a standard sorry. Not a lot of use for the time and expense incurred.

I didn't try to get a new phone, the phone was faulty.

FYI, my phones are always in waterproof cases so are pristine and mint all the time.

I have had previous iPhones and Android phones all of which have lasted beyond 3 years without issues.

The fact is that two, un-abused 128GB iPhone 6 plus models have both failed after 8 months.

    Unacceptable.

What part of "out of warranty" is confusing? When you had the phone replaced the first time, you only had 4 months warranty left. From what you're describing ("My first iPhone 6 plus 128GB lasted 8 months from new before developing a bluetooth problem. Apple replaced it. The replacement has now developed a touchscreen issue again after only 8 months rendering the phone totally useless")., you brought you replacement phone back 8 months later, which would be 4 months out of warranty.

I never said anything at all about working life or if two repairs in 16 months is common or anything else. All I said is you got exactly the same treatment everyone would get under your circumstances. Your first replacement was covered under your original one year warranty. Your second replacement was long after that warranty was over, so the OoW fee applied.  You were not treated unfairly nor unusually from what you posted.
