Using Spotlight on attached AFP partition

I have recently installed an OS X 10.6.6 Server at a client. They can't do spotlight searches on the server, and when investigating this, there seems to be a "Spotlight Server" service. I don't know how to activate that though.

How should I proceed?

The function is based on the inclusion of the _spotlight user in the ACL table for the share. And the permissions must be propagated. Follow these general steps:

1: In Server Admin, click on the Sharing tab

2: Select your Share point from the list and then press the Share Point tab view

3: Make sure the "Enable Spotlight searching" check box is selected.

4: Now go to the Permissions tab (right next to Share Point)

5: You will notice that a new ACE exists in the ACL table (_spotlight)

6: On the bottom of the Permissions pane, click the gear popup menu and select Propagate Permissions

7: By default, the "access Control List" is checked. That is usually all it needs.

8: Press OK

Now, depending on how much data you have, this may take some time to index. On the server, what the Spotlight magnifying glass in the top right corner. A small black dot will appear in the center of the magnifying glass. Wait until this goes away. Then unmount and remount the share on your clients. That should do it.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the helpful answer. However, it still doesn't work.

After propagating the permissions, no indexing takes place (ie, no black dot in the spotlight icon).

Some facts:

- The shared folders are located on an external drive.

- It's not possible to search on this drive from the server either.

More ideas?

PS. The ACE Spotlight is grey. DS.

Interesting that I am having the exact same problem as you have described and the suggested solution did not work for me either. However, I did see the blinking black dot in the middle of the Spotlight icon in the menu bar for about 2 minutes and the progress bar was visible when clicking on the Spotlight icon. Sadly, users are still not able to search the volume when mounted nor can it be searched directly on the server. Very strange. On the server, searching does not work on the folder or the drive. This is a Snow Leopard Server running on an Xserve purchased just before Christmas. Very frustrating for users and for me trying to hunt down this gremlin. Hopefully, someone will help us solve this issue.
