Zooming into the timeline causes superlag

So i searched and didn't find this listed anywhere... This is something that I've encountered in the past, as well. Basically when I zoom into my current timeline to get down to editing frames and such, Final cut starts to react slower and slower the closer I'm zoomed. You'd think (or i would anyway) that it would be the opposite, that the more that's visible on the timeline, the worse it would be. but no. when I'm zoomed out more, it's pretty fluid.

I have a 2.8 GHz intel core 2 duo MBP with 8 gigs of ram and have worked with no problems in the past wiht this same material and larger projects as well. anyone run into this before and/or know what's causing it?

also just to cover a couple bases: there are no oversized or CMYK stills in the timeline. the timeline is APR 422 and it's mostly native footage with a bit of DV archival and a couple PNG lower thirds plates. I have the waveforms turned off and all that good stuff. currently 14 audio tracks, 6 video. and. yeah. let me know if i'm being an idiot somewhere. thanks.
