settings to import mini dv

I am trying to import an old mini dv tape into final cut 7.03 using a canon hv20 hdv1080i camera. I have a firewire from the computer into the camera. I was hoping to bring it in converted to prores but I cant get it to work.

I am using "log and capture" and the only way I can get it to work is to have DEVICE CONTROL set on "non controlable device" and capture/input on dv ntsc 48. the image comes in letterboxed and squished and bad.

what am I doing wrong?

Forget ProRes . . . . . it's completely wrong for DV.

Choose the "DV-NTSC" Easy Setup, create a new project and then try capturing again.

Make sure the HV20 is otputting DV.

If your video is not 4:3 but 16:9 (widescreen) use the "DV-NTSC Anamorphic" Easy Setup.

Not sure this will work on your version of FCP, but give it a try... Go to Final CUt Pro>Audio Video settings...

In the Capture Preset there is also an option for HDV-422... you can try both, let us know if you have success...

Can you let us know whether it is standard definition DV on your tape or HDV?

I have the same camera, and an iMac with firewire 800... can you advise what cable is working for you?
