my macbook air is just over one year old (naturally). when i turned it on this morning, the sound icon was greyed. there are no devices listed to access. is this a hardware or software issue?

I don't think it's a software issue. Go to 'System Preferences' -> 'Sound', check the output sound, can you use the volume from there or is it greyed out and defaulted to 0? What happens if you plugged in a headphone into the jack? Is it still greyed out?
yes - the sound icon is grayed out and muted box is checked and grayed out. also, no items in device list. yes, did read multiple comments about plugging and unplugging earphones. hasn't worked yet. will keep fiddling.
I think the logic board should be replaced. Take your Macbook Air to Apple or call AppleCare.
I had exactly this happen on my new iMac for no apparent reason. Telephone help from Apple had me archive and install again and all was well.
I would suggest you try that first before you take your machine in, as they will ask what you have done for yourself, I'm sure.
the internal sound device has "disappeared."
