It looks like Apple changed it so that we would no longer have the exasperating "accidental delete with no undo" problem. Overall a good thing. You can delete with Command-drag like you would in the menu bar, or there is also a new "Remove from sidebar" command on the right-click menu.
What icon? In what sidebar? In what application? How have you tried to delete it?
You can't be helped unless you provide some information about your problem.
Hold CMD and drag it off.
Regards
I dragged Onyx icon to sidebar - it would not open application.
Tried to delete could not.
Deleted application and icon has become a document icon, but will not delete.
Command click - nothing shows except open preferences.
Drag it from sidebar - no smoke and will not be put in trash.
Having a similar problem with a ghost folder that still appears in the finder sidebar. The folder no longer exists and even if I recreate it nothing helps. It cannot be either selected or deleted. Anybody know how to edit the sidebar in another way? Any Terminal codes to fix this?
It should remove with ⌘-drag. (not just ⌘-click). The change from simply dragging off was introduced in 10.6.7.
If it still won't move, try removing the com.apple.finder.plist from your user/Library/Preferences folder to the desktop and relaunch Finder (Press ⌥+⌘+ESC to bring up the force quit menu, select Finder and click relaunch).
If that works, trash the .plist (a new one will already have been created, but you'll need to reset all your Finder preference setings); if not put the .plist back in the prefs folder (replacing the new one and saving the bother of resetting the prefs).
Hi all,
A while since I posted, but did get rid of the icon - ONYX - after I re installed the programme. But have to say I was also dragging with command, not ctrl which seems now the right way to go.
Thanks to all who replied
Thanks a simple CMD-drag did the job.
BLESS YOU!!! i've been trying to get something off my sidebar for a year!!! I finally decided to look here and voila!!
Keep up the good posts!!
But Why can I delete some things and this I had to CMD first??
The cmd-drag was added at the 10.6.7 update. Apparently in response to many people accidentally dragging them off.
It's always been the way to remove items from the right side of the menu bar, so it makes some sense. It would make even more if they did that with the Dock.
It would also be helpful if they actually told us in the update notes of course, but there you go…
Thanks to everyone for this--what was confusing was that the files I wanted to get rid of could not be selected so I could see no way to do anything with them. It turned out that using CMD and aiming more or less at the file managed to do it so thanks for this.
