Cd's won't burn after update to iTunes 6

New poster here (but have been reading for months).

I am an official idiot. Backround: After much stress, I solved my burn problms that started after updating to iTunes 5, thanks to this forum. I went from the error at the very end of the burn to at least being able to burn very slowly.
Finally updated to version 6, after reading here that nothing changed about burning from v5 to v6, and thinking I'd waited long enough that the bugs would be out of v6-- HA!
Now I can't burn at all --itunes hangs up right after reading the tracks. I can hear the disc spin then stop completely.Help!
Here are my diagnostics:

Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)
Hewlett-Packard Presario V2000 (EC178UA#ABA)

If you have multiple drives on the same IDE or SCSI bus, these drives may interfere with each other.
Some computers need an update to the ATA or IDE bus driver, or Intel chipset. If iTunes has problems recognizing CDs or hanging or crashing while importing or burning CDs, check the support site for the manufacturer of your computer or motherboard.

Thanks in advance for any input

sofayogi,

I don't know if we did this dance the first time, but let's start at the beginning because I don't remember helping you previously.

Go to the support page for your computer. You want to make sure you have the update labeled "Intel Chipset Installation Utility".

You have the latest firmware. Are you sure that you have your Pioneer drive set to DMA, not PIO.

Right click on "My Computer", select Properties, select the Hardware tab, select the "Device Manager" button. In the window that comes up, find the entry "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers", click on the "+" sign next to it to expand it. Select "Primary IDE Channel", right click, select Properties, select "Advanced Settings", make sure the transfer modes are "DMA, if available", not PIO. Go back and select "Secondary IDE Channel" and do the same thing.

Start there.

Well, let's try something. I haven't seen a lot of problems with Sonic solutions and iTunes conflicting with each other — but I do know that you have a slight older version of Sonic that was updated for XP's service pack 2. Did the HP support page for your computer have an update for the Sonic driver? (That's the PxHelp20 driver in your lower filters.)

Hmm, the update labeled "IDE Controller Enhancement" looks very interesting. Try that one.

If that doesn't work, there's also a quicker way to detemine if the Sonic driver is the problem.

On the start menu, click on "run". in the space it provides enter "regedit" without the quotes. This will open the registry editor.

Find the heading HKEY LOCALMACHINE. Click on it.
Find the heading SYSTEM inside it. Click on it.
Find the heading CurrentControlSet. Click
Find the heading Control. Click
Find the heading Class. Click
Find the heading that begins {4D36E965- Click

Go up to the Registry menu and select "Export Registry File... command. Make sure the "Selected Branch" radio button is checked and save that off somewhere that you can find it.

Delete the key named LowerFilter.

Then reboot, and see what iTunes does.

To get the system back to its previous state. Run Regedit again and use the Registry menu -> Import Registry File... command and select the file that you saved off in the first section.

I too am locking up after upgrading to version 6. I purchased an album last summer and burned it without incident. Then in September I downloaded iTunes 6 and last week I bought a new album. I created my playlist and went to burn it. Upon clicking burn disc iTunes becomes non-responsive. No error screen, no vanishing app, no blue screen. In short, nothing happens. (Pun intended.) The songs play fine and I am able to burn from other apps fine.

I'm having trouble burning CDs after updating to iTunes 6 too. I also had problems burning CD's with the previous version of iTunes, but was able to circumvent them by selecting a slower burn speed. Now I get an "Unknown Error (4450)" message immediately after iTunes reads the track list. I tried using different brands of CD-R (Sony and Maxwell). Neither works with iTunes, but they both worked when burning with MusicMatch. I tried right-clicking on My Computer > Properties > Hardware > DVD/CD-ROM drives, and then right-clicking on my drive and selecting "Update driver...", but it said there were no updates available. I also looked at the primary and secondary IDE channels, but they are both set to "DMA if available". Can anyone help? My CD diagnostics results are below.

I'm suddenly having burning problems also. Was working fine and will burn using other programs so I don't think it's the drive. I can click to start burning a playlist, it runs through checking the playlist, checks all of the songs, then the entire program freezes. It doesn't give an error message to help me figure out the problem. Not trying to burn songs from iTunes store, just my own compilation. Using the same disks I always have. The only thing I've done recently is run a Microsoft Security Update. Here is the info from my CD Diagnostics:

I noticed that they have an iTunes 6.0.2. Should I just upgrade? If I download from the main iTunes page will I lose all of my songs?
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

I tried to use the CD Diagnostics to do some updates. Managed to update the Intel chip and the video card. Can't find a driver update for the NEC CD-RW drive on the NEC website. Also, tried to repair through Add/Remove Programs. Also, decreased burn speed to only 4x. Nothing seems to have worked. If I uninstall and reinstall, will I lose everythign in my library? I'm relatively new at trying to fix these problems so please bear with me.
Thanks.
