Hi-

Is there an OS installed on the G5?

If so, try a PRAM reset, hold Command+Option+P+R while booting, hold through and release after the second startup chime.

Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM

As for the message from the MBP disc, that is expected.

You can only use a gray disc that shipped with the G5 or a Retail version of OS X.

Well, here is the troubleshooting and remedy proceedure for this issue:

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1440

I can boot into the open firmware area !

Does typing mac-boot and pressing Return work?

You need a way to repair the drive, but without discs...

Try a Safe Mode boot, holding Shift while starting.

This will force a machine check and afford some repairs (if needed).

Thanx for the help japamac.

No, I tried mac-boot command in open firmware - no go.

Tried holding shift on boot - no go.

"You need a way to repair the drive, but without discs"

I agree !!!

Can you give that link again, "troubleshooting and remedy proceedure for this issue"

ever since apple updated this community links are not working.

Thanx

The smart money now would be betting a failed HD.

You might try disconnecting and replacing the SATA connectors to your hard drive or moving the drive from the upper bay to the lower bay and using the connectors for the lower bay. That is a high-odds shot but might correct the problem.

Bottom line, though, is you probably need to replace the drive.

The final thing to try would be an NVRAM reset. To reset NVRAM, you need to boot into Open Firmware by holding down the cmd-option-O-F key combination until you get the white Open Firmware terminal screen. Once you are there, enter the following three commands:

reset-nvram <cr>

set-defaults <cr>

reset-all <cr>

The last command will cause the machine to reboot and with any luck, you might come up with a normal boot, but as noted above, don't bet on it.

Alright I tried all you suggested except for actually replacing the SATA Cables.

NO - GO !! Probably a bad hard drive which is a drag cause we've got some good stuff on there, plus we lost our orig install disks. Ahhh !

Alright - update

Installed OSX 10.5.6 Retail from Applecare onto a clean harddrive.

Installed ok

but the screen would go blank and the fans would rev up after a few minutes.

Ran ASD 2.5.8 And it says

The memory failed after Testing DIMM 1/J12 ERROR-Data mismatch 4

Any suggestions much appreciated.

Remove the two DIMMs in the innermost slot pair. There should be a J number at the right end of the DIMM connectors, or maybe at the left end. The DIMM in J12, which should be the top of the lower bank, is probably the failed DIMM.

In any event, you should rerun the ASD test with the two DIMMs out see if you get a clean bill of health. If that happens, then reboot and see how the machine runs.

Memory testing is a low-confidence operation until an error is found, at which time you can pretty much figure you have a failed part.

THANX Old comm guy

Its working so far. Going to buy more memory.

Another question: My original 160 GB Seagate Barracuda SATA Drive has some Data I want.

I tried connecting it to the other Bottom bay / SATA Connectors of the G5, But the G5 only shows the New Hard drive.

I tried running Disk utility but it does not see the orig SATA barracuda

Any advice much appreciated

Good that at least part of the problem resolved.

Now, for the Seagate, things do not look so good. First off, with the Seagate in place, does it show up in System Profiler in the Serial-ATA info under the Hardware heading? We have seen some reports recently where Disk Utility can't find a disk that System Profiler can. That would be one encouraging data point.

Also, we have gotten a couple of reports of DiskWarrior "finding" and repairing a "missing" disc. I have had several good directory repair instances over the years with DW, though nothing with quite so dismal an outlook. If the drive shows up in System Profiler, at least the bare drive itself, then DW might be able to handle the situation.

In any event, I am curious as to whether System Profiler sees the Seagate.

Tried Disk utility, system profiler and disk warrior, no go,

just does not see the Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 which by the way is the original OEM Hard drive that came with this G5 That cost us an arm and a leg in 2004.

Anyway, Maybe this Barracuda has the SSC (Spread Spectrum Clocking) feature enabled?

But then again it worked ok for 6years

I don't know if this specific Hard drive has SSC.

Will keep banging away.

Any advice or ideas much appreciated !!

Replace the drive.

It has served you faithfully for long enough.

No. the 7200.7 doesn't have a clue as to what that is.....

But then again it worked ok for 6years

That's like 80 in Human years......
