Hi,

You cannot recover? Do you mean restore? Place your iPod in Recovery Mode and restore it that way.

Hope this helps!

After trying umpteen times on my iMac to fix this issue (without any success), I decided to try it out on my Windows XP notebook... Viola! It worked on the very first try. I found this funny and ironic. In hindsight, I'd would also suggest plugging directly into the computer's USB port rather than a usb port on another accessory like a keyboard or usb hub.

Steps I tried:

1. Download and install the latest iTunes software from apple.com. Launch the iTunes application.

2. Power off the iPod by holding down both the power button and home button simultaneously.

3. Connect your iPod to your computer using iPod USB cable plugged into your computer USB port (not a USB hub or accessory usb port)

4. If your iPod does not turn on automatically after connecting, power up the iPod by repeating Step. 2

5. Your iPod should then be mounted and listed in the left column of your iTunes app.

(Once you have a live internet connection, the iPod driver will be installed automagically in Windows XP through the "Found New Hardware" process, after you connect)

Good Luck!

Apples support page on this issue has an error.

(For a computer that was never synched to the ipod)

Apple says "Disconnect the USB cable from the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port." Then hold the home button down. This DOES NOT WORK on a disabled ipod. I had to leave the ipod plugged into the computer, hold the home and power buttons until it shows the shutdown slider (or simply keep holding until it restarts). THEN hold the home button. YOU MUST LEAVE IT PLUGGED IN THE WHOLE TIME. If you follow Apple's directions and unplug it, iTunes tells you that it is locked with a passcode and will not let you enter recovery mode. The video link posted by Fezento above has this correct.

I have a similar issue, but with a twist - I have the itunes symbol and usb cord screen but when I go to connect to itunes to finsh what apple says to do, itunes will not let me connect the itouch because it says it has been locked by the passcode - I know the passcode, but cannot enter it because the screen is locked on the itunes logo usb cord screen - about to pull my hair out over this !!!!!
