Apr 20, 2011 6:08 PM in response to tubecrawlerby Bob Timmons,If you are planning to "extend" using wireless only, the AirPort Extreme can only perform this function when it used with another Apple router on the network. As far we know, the "extend" feature is not compatible with devices from other manufacturers.
If you are able to establish a permanent wired ethernet connection between your NetComm router and the AirPort Extreme, it may be possible to configure the AirPort Extreme to use the exact same wireless network name, wireless security and password and in effect, extend the network by providing more wireless coverage. Post back if you need more info on this.

Apr 20, 2011 6:10 PM in response to Bob Timmonsby tubecrawler,Thanks Bob. Seems crazy that the AirPort Extreme wont allow me to extend my wireless network wirelessly. If I connect the 2 devices using an Ethernet cable they work fine but they wont talk to each other wirelessly. The NetComm NB6Plus4Wn modem is great. It is fast and has a pretty big WiFi reach around my home. I need to extend my WiFi network into my shed. The signal from the NetComm NB6Plus4Wn is pretty strong and the AirPort has no problem seeing the NetComm NB6Plus4Wn. It just wont extend the network.

Apr 20, 2011 6:26 PM in response to tubecrawlerby Bob Timmons,Using wireless only, in general, devices from one manufacturer will rarely extend the wireless signal of another device from another manufacturer. So, it makes sense to stick with one manufacturer for your routing needs so that you can be assured of compatibility.
Maybe NetComm offers a product to "extend" their devices using wireless only. If not, why not?
As far as we know (and based on our own experience), Linksys will not extend Netgear. D-Link won't extend 2-Wire, etc. There may be some rare exceptions, but I can't think of any, or recall hearing about this on the forum.

Apr 20, 2011 10:49 PM in response to Bob Timmonsby tubecrawler,To run an Extreme network I have to connect the Apply wireless router to a modem and it seems the only way to do this is via Ethernet. This doesn't make sense to me! Surely there is a work around for this? The NetComm modem has so many user adjustable settings. I am just not sure what they need to look like.

Apr 21, 2011 6:49 AM in response to tubecrawlerby Bob Timmons,I'm afraid that your only option is to establish a permanent Ethernet connection between one of the LAN <-> ports on the Netcomm router to the WAN (circle of dots icon) port on the AirPort Extreme. Unfortunately, there is no work around for this.
If you are not able to install an Ethernet cable, you might want to take a look at a pair of Ethernet powerline adapters to transmit the Ethernet signal over the power lines in your home. Click this link for some basic information about Ethernet powerline adapters. http://computer.howstuffworks.com/power-network.htm
Once you have the Ethernet connection established between your Netcomm router and the AirPort Extreme, I can help you with the configuration of the AirPort Extreme if you can provide the exact name of your Netcomm wireless network and the exact type of wireless security settings you have at present.

Mar 30, 2012 3:44 AM in response to tubecrawlerby nvidia2008,Technically you might be able to use WDS to extend the network. It's quite complicated but it is possible: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4262?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

Please start a new post for this. We need to know what you want the AirPort Extreme to do, where it will be located, and the make and model number of your current router.
Someone will be able to help you. I will answer if I see the post and it has not already been answered by one of the experts.
