I have repeatedly tried to plug in my cable to sync my iPhone. It will charge on this same cable. Now I need to update phone and play iPod as it now doesn't recognize my music after an update via PC.
iPhone 3G, Mac OS X (10.5.8)
Is the port USB 2.0?
Interesting.
I'd try it on another port, another computer, etc, if possible. If all of that fails, I'd seek a replacement cable from Apple. Even though the cable does charge the phone, sometimes it can still be bad.

Well, I tried the other ports. I downloaded the latest iTunes to ensure my phoneand iTunes are at least somewhat close in versions/updates.
the USB supports my keyboard & mouse also, btw.
OK, now i checked the system profiler > more info>and wen to the USB port and the iPhone was not listed under the hi speed USB port.
Sounds like there is an issue with the cable then.
There are 30 pins, I think only 2 or 4 are used to charge the phone. So if another pin was broken, the phone would still charge but would not connect to the computer.

I also tried a diff cable. I may have a bad USB "set". I might have to purchase a new mini. Yikes.

Is this the cable that was included with the iPhone?
If you boot to the install disk included with your computer, dose it show up in system profiler? (this is to rule out a software issue with the current OS install)
Have you tried a SMC Reset?
Have you tried a NVRAM Reset?

I have several cables, so I dunno if it came with the phone. I have tried other cables with same result.
Have not booted to the install disk, wherever that is.
