Hi there,

I've tried that and didn't help

I've seen lot of posts of the same issue since 2005 and no one is really giving a relieving answer.

I've checked every single proposal to sort this, but...

Except somebody that say it would work with a compressed file,

(what I can't do, I'm delivering my photographic work to a client and it as to be organized as files in folders.)

It was working perfectly well on my macbook pro, until some months ago, as it was still working with CD,

I said to myself to go ahead with the second computur (i.mac) I have in the office.

While in the middle of recording DVD for my client the SCARY message did appear again once, splitted to another DVD support that did work, than again, errathic for a while, but now nothing else to do, changing DVD brand, cleaning CD, permissions, software updates, burning from another software, burn a disk image from disk utility or whatever was suggested here in these years.

That's two computers bought at the same time with 3 years of work behind and both are getting the DVD lens old already? Isn't this a bit ridiculous for a so expansive brand as apple.

Any other idea I may not have tried?

Cheers

So here's the resolution. The optical drive was bad and was replaced by Apple. I went in to the Apple Store, the tech tried to burn a DVD off of a known working version of OS X on an external drive, and the problem reappered. Since the problem wasn't related to my version of OS X, the drive was assumed to be bad and was replaced while I waited. New drive is working now, but I did get the old loud version of the drives. Oh well.

Here is the error log of the disk utility on my MacBook Pro, it might help me to find a truly answer of the problem, I am living in Mexico and do not have an Apple Store around the corner:

I have the same problem and have read all the forum info on it. Mine happens with one brand of DVD- the Sony -R but not on the Sony +R. I've always had snow leopard on this MacBook Pro and haven't had problems for a year, but have also always been using the +R.

I want to try the compressed air because I am in Afghanistan and can't get a cleaning disk or replace the drive easy but do have a can of Power Duster. Can anyone give me any specific directions on how to do this- just shoot the air into the slot from the outside or use the skinny tube and stick it in the drive and how much should I use?

Thanks

my drive is a matshita UJ857E, Firmware ZA0E. I got the following message when i tried to burn a dvd:

drive failed.the device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media

then i found this simple solution:

"I used a business card and a cleaning cloth, which comes with the mac or iPhone. I switched off the laptop. I wrapped the cloth around the business card and while holding the ends of the the cloth I very gently dived it for a couple of centimeters in the optical drive, pushed and pulled a bit. I cleaned on the left side of SuperDrive, since the lens should be at the left hand side."

unbelievable! my drive works again!!!

I'm having this same problem. My MBP is less than a month old and this is the first time I've tried to burn a disc with it. I don't have any compressed air at home but my question is: should I bother buying some and giving that a shot or should I just book a Genius appt and have them replace the drive. See as how this is a BRAND NEW computer (3 weeks old to be exact) I'm not too pleased that I'm already having hardware issues.

EDIT:

my drive is a matshita UJ857E, Firmware ZA0E. I got the following message when i tried to burn a dvd:

I've also tried this with no luck. Help? 😟

I also had this problem and had my optical drive replaced by Apple. It would've been nice if they actually tested it before giving it back to me, because the same problem remained after the drive was replaced. I googled the error message and found this:

Open System Preferences.
Click on "International"
Under "Languages": Drag any of the other languages to the top,
then drag English back to the top.
Set "Order for sorted lists" to English
Set "Word Break" to English (United States, computer)
Close System Preferences
Restart computer

I cannot believe it, but this crazy fix (on a 24" Core 2 Duo iMac) worked for me:

Open System Preferences.
Click on "International"
Under "Languages": Drag any of the other languages to the top,
then drag English back to the top.
Set "Order for sorted lists" to English
Set "Word Break" to English (United States, computer)
Close System Preferences
Restart computer

I tried it, and it actually worked! I couldn't follow the directions exactly as listed here since I'm probably running a different OS but I changed what I could. It's unbelievable, maybe the drive was not faulty afterall...

I hope this helps someone 🙂

I got the

"failed to calibrate the laser power level"

error, and had a very hard time tracking it down.

The answer for me was that the 8x disks that I had could not be burned in the 2.4x drive that I had, at ANY speed -- they were incompatible with the drive. It appears in some types of discs there are Ranges of speeds, and you need the speed range that is compatible with your drive.

The disc can’t be burned, because the device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media.
