I'm thinking of buying Pages for my iMac i7 quad-core. Is the software able to read files created in Word on a PC and saved in Open Document (.odt) format? And can it also create new files and save them in that format?

according to this http://www.apple.com/iwork/compatibility/ .odt is not supported by Pages/iWork.
You might be better of using OpenOffice or NeoOffice or LibreOffice
