Why is my display so faint for greyed out areas and especially boxes for input

My Power Book Pro displayy works well enough but when I am looking at forms the text and the outline of the box for data entry are so faint as to be unreadable. Sometimes I have to "find" the box by seeing where the cursor goes to .

What settings can I change or is this a sign of old age? I have tried adjustimg the contrast contrast but that does not seem to help.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.4)

You might want to repost this in the MacBook Pro section rather than the PowerBook section as the visitors there might have a specific solution to your problem that escapes the PowerBook crowd, as it does me, for instance.
