Airport express as base station and extender.

If i have an Airport express as a base station can i wirelessly connect another Airport express to it to be used as a wireless extender (repeater) so that either a Macbook pro or windows laptop can connect to it in a previously poor reception area?

Yes, if you have an AirPort Express 802.11n and you add another AirPort Express 802.11n. And, the "extending" AirPort Express is located where it can receive a good signal from your main base station. In general, an "extending" Express should be located at a point that is approximately half the distance between the main base station and the general area that needs more wireless coverage. Walls and other obstructions may affect this, of course.

If you are not sure which device you have, look for the model number on the side of your AirPort Expess in the faint print. Model No A 1264 is the "n" version of the AirPort Express.

The one i have is "n" version. I did buy it originally to use as an extender for a belkin wireless router and although it will connect wirelessly to the router it does not seem to transmit any wireless for it to be used as an extender. Someone told me this is the case if the base station isn't an airport device but they did say that the base station should be the airport extreme.

Thanks for clarifying this Bob Timmons.

To clarify, your current AirPort Express 802.11n is not compatible with the Belkin router for the purpose of extending the Belkin wireless network using wireless only.

If you have your existing AirPort Express connected to the Belkin router using an ethernet cable....and...you have configured the AirPort Express to "create a wireless network", you can "extend" this network if you add another AirPort Expess"n" and configure the new device to "extend a wireless network"

You do not need an AirPort Extreme as the base station in order for an Express to "extend" the wireless signal. Any Apple router can 'extend" the wireless created by any other Apple router.... a Time Capsule, AirPort Extreme , or AirPort Express as long as all devices are "n" devices.
