Macbook Pro- time and date changes to random?

My 2011 Macbook Pro's battery died. I plugged it in, and it turned back on. After starting up, I got a message saying:

Your computer's clock is set to a date before January 1, 2008. This may cause some applications to behave erratically.

And my clock & date was, in fact, set to an incorrect time and some date in 2000. I just corrected the date and it was fine.

Any idea why this happened/if it's a sign of a problem?

The system's time got reset somehow when the battery ran down. As long as you set it back then you will be good to go. If the system date is not correct then problems can happen when the system manages things like modification and creation dates for files.

do you have set date and time automatically checked (it's the first tab under that setting). I think you have to uncheck that before you can manually set the date and time. When that happened to me, I had to manually set before could even log onto my wifi. Then after setting date and time manually, I restarted, wifi logged in ok, and then set back to auto set.
