eMac freezes randomly, open window turns into broken up jibber

My eMac freezes randomly, open window turns into broken up jibber (kinda looks like I put a photoshop filter on it or something). I can't force quit when it does this, no error message, I've repaired permissions. Any ideas?

I have been monitoring this issue since January. I work for an organization that purchased 25 of this emac model. I first contacted Apple Customer Relations in February to report symptoms on 5 computers. They took my information and gave me a case number.
Fast forward to today. After checking all 25 machines I found 14 of them had swelling or leaking capacitors. I contacted Tech Support explained the situation. I was then passed to a Product Specialist in Austin Texas. I gave him the details, serial numbers and sent some pictures. I received a call back within a couple of hours and was given a Customer Satisfaction Code to have all 14 logic boards replaced.
Hopefully once they pin down the serial number range an extended repair program will be put in place.

Hey guys,

I just got my emac back today from my local Apple repair center and it is fixed. Free of charge I might add.

I called Apple a few weeks ago and got in touch with an Apple Care Rep. and told him about my situation with the caps bulging and leaking and they deemed that the problem could be a safety hazard. I also mentioned this thread to the Apple Care Rep. They gave me a case number and I took it in and now it is fixed.

I need to mention that I did not have Apple care on this unit. Thank you all for encouraging me to make the call. I hope all of you that have not been taken care of are in the very immediate future.

Get this...

If your computer uses an airport to get internet, safe boot aint gonna work for you. Yeah, you can play your games that arent on line or do offline work becasue the ATIs are off, but no interent acccess can be had if you have an airport card.

SO basicall, we are screwed

plus

computers arent meant to be run in safe boot all the time.

Alright, guys. I brought my eMac into the store yesterday. I explained the problem, and the guys didn't immediately believe that I knew exactly what it was. One questioned if I tried reinstalling OS X, and I told him that I knew it wouldn't help. I then told them to look in the hatch. They did, and saw the leaking capacitors.

After one of them looked at something on his PowerBook, he told me that "it wouldn't make finacial sense to have the computer repaired". He then told me the cost would be around $700. I replied by mentioning that some of the guys from this topic getting their logic boards replaced for free. He didn't seem to trust the validity of the users posting in this topic; he told me these were only claims, mentioning that this was only the second time in five years that he's seen this problem in an eMac.

After a bit of fact passing between us (talking about the similar situation with the iMac G5s, and how they had an extended repair opportunity, which the eMacs do not have), he checked something else on his PowerBook and told me that I would not have to pay for the part. The price of the labor, however, would be $143.10. I found this reasonable and accepted. He also told me that if he finds certain information on the subject, I might not have to pay for the labor either.

I'll update you guys when I receive the eMac again. Even if I must pay for the labor, $143.10 is not bad. I was rather pleased by the Genius Bar service. I did set up an appointment in advance, and even though I was rather late, they still accomodated me.

If you are going to take your machines in, make sure you set an appoitment in advance, and mention some of the information from this topic.

Thanks to you that got me here and those that posted. After hours of reading and gathering your information I finally called Apple today. I told the first person in customer service that I had an e-Mac with the capacitor problem, they asked the usual questions about the problems I was having then transferred me another gentleman that gave a Case #. One more transfer to a guy that "handles this problem" and he told me to take my machine to an authorized dealer for repair. The whole process took about 10 minutes. The number I called was 1-800-767-2775. Alvin was the guy that handles this problem with the e-Mac. My faith in Apple has been restored.

I was fortunate enough to get my MOB replaced free of charge. After bringing my emac home and using it for one week with no problems, I looked under the access panel. One of the caps on the new board has a + on it the other a Y. Does anyone know if ALL the + types go bad or just some?

POW - check again and see if the one with the "+" is the SAME as the badcaps... my new logic board had a "+" one one of the caps, but it was a different colour to the bad ones... The bad ones are black and orange/goldish with "HN(M)" written on the side...

avanos - yep, basically it all comes down to how nice the person is that you happen to talk to when you call up as to whether you get the eMac repaired or not...

Of course, it will help to email s_jobs@apple.com and POLITELY put your case... also a good idea to call and ask to talk to "Executive Relations", as this is often the department that has helped the most people out... Look for the bad caps first, and be aware they will 99% likely want you to have the computer examined by an Apple rep before committing to anything.

Hum? Thanks for the advices cosmichobo, but I don't think that writting to Steve job will help.. we're not even sure if this is a real adress! Calling the apple is a good solution, but a group of person can always make things move faster that one person at a time.

I think that the real thing we gonna have to, is a petition on the web, on this site or something like this, explaining politly the problem we experiencing and send it to the good person at apple. Maybe a person that is better than me in english could do that?

C'ause right now, even if we are on the apple site discussing about that problem, I did'nt see a apple technician or responsible person on this thread!

What do you think people?

avanos - you are right - Apple doesn't officially accept anything written in these pages. Apple Tech Staff also ignore these posts, as they are unproven - could be written by the same person using multiple log ins.

However - s_jobs@apple.com is a valid email address - I know because I used it, and as a result was contacted by Apple Executive Relations and my eMac was duly repaired free of charge.

We did attempt to start a thread asking people with the problem to note their serial number as proof that their eMac was afflicted by the problem. The thread(s) were deleted by the website monitors. I started a thread over at MacFixIt.com, which now has several hundred eMac serial numbers on it.

Apple Exec contacted me within a day or so of my email to s_jobs@apple.com. This is a know working method.

Apple is most certainly monitoring this thread. They're just not commenting about it.
