eMac freezes randomly, open window turns into broken up jibber

My eMac freezes randomly, open window turns into broken up jibber (kinda looks like I put a photoshop filter on it or something). I can't force quit when it does this, no error message, I've repaired permissions. Any ideas?

Hi M Willian!
A big thanks for your answer! YEs I wrote to alll those adresses..and no answer.. snif! But, excuse me for bottering you with that again... but I think that YES your case number can help us. When I was calling Apple, they asked me if I've got some proofs that somebody get his eMac repared for free.. and I had to say no! With your case number that can change everythings.

And I really don't want to insult you or anything, beleive me, «my first language is french, so I'm trying to do my best here. So my words could not be exact! 🙂 » but internet is what it is, and it will proove us once for all, that we can have it repair for free and this is not a spoof or a Apple guy trying to extinguish the fire!
...And what a good thing to say to Apple when calling them! 😀

Sorry, I don't have my case # anymore but my serial number is G842814XQQH and the repair id is R7996003 if that helps.

Another good resource is this thread ( http://www.macfixitforums.com/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=Forum11&Number=754025&page =0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=31&fpart=all&vc=1 ) which has a list of over 100 serial numbers of machines reported to have this problem.

I hope this helps!

I have 9 1.25 ghz eMacs and all of them are starting to freeze up. I of course tried everything from a new OS to new ram and hard drive. What FIXED the problem was replacing the bad capacitors on the mother board. There are 8 Nichicon HN(M) series 1800uf 6.3 volt caps which in my machines all have buldging tops. In the first machine I've repaired, the caps that had actualy started leaking test bad. After replacing the offending capacitors, the machine runs like a champ. 🙂

Okay, I'm impressed. You successfully disassembled your eMac, replaced 8 caps on a multi-layered board full of surface-mount components, put everything back together ... and it works? Please post photos online somewhere and send a link to this board. I'm moderately handy with a soldering iron, and toyed with the idea of replacing the caps myself, but chickened out after a close look at the job.

If I don't hear back from Steve Jobs's office soon (I sent him an email yesterday, as instructed on this forum), I may want to revisit the possibility of fixing it myself.

Finally replaced the logic board with blown caps. I called apple and explained the problem and customer support person wouldn't help without apple care... HOWEVER, I asked to speak with a supervisor who then transfered me to a "Tier 2" person. They were curtious enough. The tier 2 wanted a photo of the blown caps as he had recently received a memo about the problem. I immediately spotted the problem (found by easily opening back cover where ram is replaced) and took digital pics of bulges and leakes. I e-mailed jpeg photos back to him.The T2 guy replied that they would fix free of charge. Make sure to get a "CS" number and confirmation or case number as well. I then called a local authorized MAC repair site here in San Antonio (the apple store seemed to be a hassle). It took several days for him to receive the part and then install. Total time to fix from call to pick up at repair- 7 days. Cost- nothing, properly working mac- priceless. Hopefully it will hold???

I called Apple back in May, and wormed my way through the "you're computer is out of warranty" and "you need apple care." You need a "Customer Relations Officer" or something like that. Once I finally got there, I directed they guy to this thread, and he said "Oh gosh, that does look like a problem." Then, he asked for some pictures, saying that there was an ongoing investigation. My computer was gone for about 12 days (8 business days), because the logic board was out of stock at Apple. You also need to make sure it will be free. They shouldn't charge you any money at all.

Serial Number: G84389 ***

It had bad caps, and only the video seemed to be freezing - this I found odd. I could be listening to music, and even though I couldn't do anything on screen, my music would still be playing in iTunes.

that whole emailing s_jobs thing worked like a charm. seriously -- within 24 hours a woman called me from "the executive offices," saying she was responding to my e-mail to Steve Jobs. She told me that my office apparently has Apple Care for the ailing eMac and went on to set up a tech to call me for an appointment (apparently the Apple Care includes in-house service, so i don't have to take anything anywhere!). She also confirmed that the whole capacitor thing is a no-charge situation.

PLUS, she gave me her direct e-mail and phone number and said if i don't hear anything after a couple business days to let her know and she'll straighten it alllll out.

maybe i'm just charmed, but gawd i luv apple.

if anybody hasn't heard from an s_jobs e-mail, i'd recommend another shot at it ...

my emac started going black...then to jibberish melt down. My 7/08/04 emac is now almost dead. Apple has told me several times, even after filing a formal complaint #64505486, sorry you should start saving for a new computer.Yes, I was actually told to save money for a new one. I bought this emac for school, as I am a disabled student on a fixed income. They don't care. I was also told that if I take it an hour and ten minutes away...they MIGHT want it to recycle but i'd have to call long distance to find out. After owning a pc clone I built for 7 years, and owning a new mac for less then two, I hope they realize the big picture they are creating for us younger first time mac buyers. I loved my mac, and always bragged about how wonderful a company they are. How can I honestly say that anymore. Apple is a beatifully crafted mechanical toy. For school I need reliable machine. Please realize this has been written after hours of being on the phone and mailing steve jobs, no one cares and says this is an isolated problem. Good luck to anyone reading this....i mean it, cause we need it.
I HAVE EMAILED MY LOCAL TV STATION, CALL 3. WE SHOULD NOT ACCEPT THIS TREATMENT....(is this a class action thing? i live in california)

Hey everyone,

After my last post describing how I was offered a $100.00 discount from Apple I decided to give it one last try and emailed s_jobs@apple.com. I described the situation again and was contacted 2 days later. The person I spoke with apologized for the problem and let me know that Apple would fix it for free. She also told me that the customer relations person I talked to should have known about this issue and then she took the time to call the Apple Reseller that I would be going to and confirm that the repair would be free.

If anyone is having problems they might call 1-800-275-2273 and hopefully that might help.

Rick
