Q: 2011 MacBook Pro hard freeze - possible fix (man pmset)

I got fed up with all the hard lockups on my brand new 2011 MacBook pro. So I did some reading, called some IT buddies. We tried turning off Sudden Motion Sensor (man pmset). Well, well...after 48 hours, not one single hard freeze.

 

I think the litmus test is to re-enable Sudden Motion Sensor...but why fix something that (now) isn't broken?

    i have same problem and unfortunately i can say that i've tried and there is no any solution with re-install MacOS 10.6.7

    there is a one solution that renew it with another mac wihtin return days.

     

    by the way i have a question that i bought my mac from u.s but now i am in Turkey. i can't go back to u.s for a month. can i return it to apple store in Turkey with my bill?

    Our 84+ pages post has been “reduced” (but I’m sure everybody saved the most significant answers and notifications ). I've done my last test today, and here is the situation:

    1) 10.6.7 dedicated to early 2011 MBP solved part of the problems, but not all

    2) when using the discrete graphic card, the system freezes (at least if using iTunes 10.2.2(12) or earlier - other software didn’t give me the same problem); changing SMS to 0 didn’t do the trick for me

    3) when using only the integrated card (SMS activated) the system works rock-solid as it should be (my old MBP crashed 2 times in 2 years)

     

    Maybe it is a problem with the graphic card of my MBP - but I strongly suspect that is a firmware problem, seeing all the messages from you all (before the post was reduced, of course).

     

    Will visit a Apple Support Center next week, in the meanwhile I’m sticking to integrated card.

    OK, Apple released a couple more firmware updates for Early 2011 MacBook Pro laptops...I'm going to enable SMS on a dozen or so MacBook Pro laptops to see if the hard lock ups go away.

    Hi Don, how is it going? The two updates didn’t solve my problem - I need to stick to integrated graphic card. Are your Macs working fine now?

    Hello there,

     

    These two updates didn't solve my problem too. On the other hand I think I found a useful hint that changing your memories(RAM) place or chage your memories with anothers. It seems that this freezing problem is a characteristic memory disorder and this changing may solve our problem. I'll do it at Apple Services couse of guarantie issues. After that I'll share the situation.

     

    If memory changing doesn't solve our problem I am afraid that our mainboard smiles us like this

    i am actually wondering did u guys upgrade the RAM of ur macbook pros to 8GB? Cuz i did upgrade it to 8GB through apple store and I just have a feeling that the RAM would be the contributing factor to the frequent freezing up problem.

     

    My situation seems becoming better after i installed those two update pkgs, but the freezing issue still exist, especially when i was running multi programs and switching between them (such as itunes/safari/pages/movist etc.), then the five-language-sign just pop up...

    Those are kernel panics--usually hardware-related and could be caused by RAM. I ordered 8GB of RAM from Omni Technologies right after I placed the order online at Apple for my MBP. I installed the RAM as soon as I got the computer and I have never experienced a kernel panic yet.

    Yes, I upgraded to 8G of RAM. I bought two "4GB DDR3 PC3-10600 MEMORY MODULE" chips from them. I called, they have a lifetime warranty (which is the reason I only buy RAM from them). Crucial charges $99 for an 8G kit...vs the $400 that Apple charges.

     

    I can't remove the RAM since I replaced both chips...but I have a hard time believing it's RAM related. At least for me, since all freezes went away.

     

    I have SMS on and all patches applied. No freezes in the last couple days.

    Same for me. Upgraded 8GB, not original AFAIK (the shop installed samsung memory without informing me)...

    Since i am not living in a city which has a apple store, do u get any suggestion for me to do a test for the RAM or for the macbook pro?

    Guys if we collect 'useless ways' I can say that this RAM replace stuff doesn't works. I replaced, plug in-out my RAMs and MBP still freezes. But I'll try the change my RAMs with another. May be it works.

     

    So try another ways to solve the freezing. Summary is;

     

    Useless Ways to Handle with Freezing (3 beep)

    1) Software update

    2) Replace RAMs (2x2 GB)

    Way to go, esatcetin. I think that's a good way to collect those useless ways.

     

    Since i really have no clue about what i am dealing with, i would probably keep checking the new posts under this discussion...

     

    BTW, i am planning to make an appointment with the genuis bar and visit an apple retail store next week. Though it's located in another city, it seems like the only thing i can do at the moment. i really dont want to lose all my essay again when i am doing assignment...

     

    I'll let u guys know if i can get my problems solved.

    Thanks Don. I've tried applejack in the morning (i am in Australia), but my laptop froze twice in the afternoon... seems i am not the lucky one...
