If you go to Garageband -> Preferences -> Audio/MIDI ->

There's an Audio Output (and Audio Input) setting. Make sure your Audio Output setting is set to the device that's connected to your speakers. For example, if you are using an audio interface, make sure it's selected.

If the settings are correct, you could always try restarting your computer (and/or your interface if you're using one). Sometimes that does the trick.

I had this problem too... and then found that I had somehow turned ducking off (in the control menu). I have no idea why that should make a difference, but turning it back on fixed the issue

This happens to me every once in a while and the way I fix it is by saving the file and quitting gb. Then reopen the file and it seems to work.

please help me , i think i have the same problem but i can't find ducking nor the control menu your talking about

This comment may be ages old, but it was the only one in a stack of sources I could find online that worked. There were so many people suggesting things like locking and unlocking tracks, checking to make sure you had your devices set up correctly etc. This advice however went straight to the point and it worked. Although I will say that I am wondering why on earth it muted in the first place since I never toggled the setting. (I wouldn't make my microphone be the source of output, duh) But I suppose it doesn't matter since I happened upon this fix. THANKS A TON!
