You have to install the free (for 4G users) Find my iPhone app on your iTouch before it goes missing. Then you can locate it, cause it to beep, send a message or delete all data on it ***IF***:

*The iPod is in range of an unsecured Wi-Fi source.

*It has not been turned off

*The wi-fi has not been turned off

*It has not been restored

Then using mobil.me you (not Apple) can locate your iPod

I just had my iPod touch stolen. I had the "Find my iPhone" app installed and it still can not be found. I had the locking on so after 10 tries it will lock up and wipe data....but supposedly someone can reload the Apple software and bingo they can use it like it was new...

Any comments from anyone?

Yes, anyone can plug the device into iTunes and "restore as new". This will wipe all the previous user content off the device and set it up as it was when new. This has to be allowed as it is a basic trouble shooting step for all owners, should their device become severely corrupted or otherwise messed up. Since restoring as new wipes everything, your data is gone, including your iCloud account and the find-my-device setting, making it untrackable.

As to Apple tracking serial numbers or IMEI, that has been discussed many times here - Apple is not a law enforcement agency nor an insurance company so they are not going to get into the business of being either. Not to mention the privacy issues of anyone tracking someone else remotely (law enforcement generally requires a court's permission to do the same kind of thing, after having shown due and legal just cause).

Sorry, but no. Nothing will stop someone from plugging an iOS device into iTunes, restoring as a NEW device and then activating it. This is also one of the means of fixing drastic problems for legitimate owners, for instance when a software update gets completely corrupted. Restore as new wipes all the information off the device and restores it to as it was originally right out of the box. Whomever has it at that point can activate it as theirs and use it as their own after that.

appearantly you cant have your ipod tracked. 😟 i had my stolen from school the other day and i had theam. Some say tht you FIND MY IPHONE app but since my ipod died, it did nothing! So i guess ur outta luck as well as i can track it down by the serial number... I TRIED IT AND IT DID NOT HELP! 😟 so no theres no way of getting your ipod back... srry
