If the phone is unlocked, then yes you can use in the US. You can purchase AT&T sim card, T mobile, etc.

You've got three choices: AT&T, T-Mobile or rent a sim from iPhoneTrip. AT&T is not very friendly to travelers using an iPhone. They have disabled data on all of their pre-paid sims. If you try and use such in an iPhone. you'll get voice, but no data. The next alternative is T-Mobile, but their 3G network is not compatible with the iPhone, so you'll get data but only on their edge network. To get data, on an iPhone, with AT&T requires a post paid plan, i.e.-month to month, which will require going to an AT&T store when you get here. Last, you can rent a sim from these folks, not cheap, but it does work(they use AT&T sims):

The prices are ridiculous if you stay more than 10 days. It may be cheaper for you to have a friend in the US add your phone to their account for a year at $9.99 a month if they have AT&T or T mobile and get more minutes and data. Yes they will have to fulfill the contract, but that's a total of $120 instead of a lot more if you use the prepaid plans.

This would be your best option then. Go to an AT&T store and ask for a Go phone card and select the different options you want.
Also don't worry too much about connecting to Internet, as many stores, restaurants, bars, grocery stores, libraries, etc have free wifi. Also, download the app textPlus, so you can text to your family and friends back home for free. Just need to keep app running in background and notifications turned on. Get the free version. Works great!
