Anybody out there who agrees? The only reason that I haven't bought and IPad is that I don't want 2 monthly ISP payments to ATT. If Apple made an IPhone that could connect to an IPad with lap dock capability, like the new ATT 4G Attrix smartphone, it would definitely be another home run for Apple! Making it possible to run your IPhone & IPad with one ISP monthly payment instead of 2 is a no brainer!

So why not buy a wifi iPad, and if you feel it's necessary tether it to your iPhone. No doubt your AT&T will demand more money, but there's no lacking in the technology.
Tonefox, the whole point of my question was to be able to avoid paying ATT for 2 ISP connections. Are you telling me that an IPhone & IPad can be tether together so the IPhone runs the wifi IPad internet connections?
The WiFi hotspot feature of iOS 4.3 would allow your WiFi iPad to share an iPhone 4's cellular connection.
Larry, will this allow the IPhone connection to the wifi IPad to connect anywhere or just in a wifi hotspot?
Exactly. The iPad feeds off the iPhones Internet connection.
In a wifi hotspot, the wifi iPad is content. Where only a cellular connection is available, the iPhone acts as a wireless router for the iPad. I'm sure this is all in the manual somewhere...

No, you need to talk to your provider. AT&T or such, if you are in the US, or whoever. (I get a bit bored by the universal assumption that all iPhone users are in the US. :-). )
There is no tether needed. With the hotspot feature enabled the iPhone becomes a wireless hotspot, just like Starbucks. It uses its cellular connection to connect the WiFi network to the Internet. Similar to the "MiFi" cellular hotspots that Verizon and other carriers sell.
Larry & Tonefox Thank you both! Larry I understand now and I'm aware of the wifi feature on my IPhone 4. Its something I never use because my cellular connections has always been good in my area. I understand now how the connection can be made between my IPhone 4 & a wifi IPad without having to pay ATT twice. Thanks both of you. Patrick
