Hi,
Try restarting your iPad. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider to turn off iPad. To turn iPad back on, press and hold the Sleep/Wake until the Apple logo appears.

Another option to consider...
try holding the home and power buttons until the screen goes black and the white Apple logo appears, then release the buttons.
It sounds like your ipad is frozen and the standard shutdown might not work.
Same problem here.
For me this all started with the Mail APP going bad. I had 75 emails, and went into delete them. I hit edit, ticked each one, and then the DELETE all. It froze. I shut down the app and restarted and there were my 75 message again.
I went and tried just deleting 10 messages. They went away, but then the APP hung again. I shut the APP down and then tried again. Guess what? 75 messages.
I went to my online POP server and deleted the messages, then fired up the app again on the iPAD 2. 75 messages. Deleted them all, but again...it hung.
So now I clicked and held the sleep/wake button, got the red slider and engaged the shutdown. The little circular icon has been going round and round now for 30 minutes. Yeah, I don't think it's going to shut down until the battery does.
This is the first piece of Apple equipment that I can honestly say, I wished I never gotten.
Thanks for helping me unfreeze my ipad
Yay! I had a similar issue to kkathman's. Dogg's two button reset worked! Thanks!
kkathman, did you resolve your problem? Mine just seemed to have problem now with the Mail app freezing so I went to power down to reboot. The screen went black and I have the grey circle going round and round. It won't let me do a hard reboot by simultaneously pressing home screen and power button. Think I have to just let the battery run down, but curious what you did to resolve. Not a good sign for ipad2 to have this type of problem....
You're welcome 🙂
MANY THANKS.... I was beginning to panic, but your solution worked !!!!
I had the same problem, and Dogg's solution worked perfectly!!! Word of advice, if you are trying to send a .pdf file to yourself from your library, send it to an e-mail that is not the default of the iPad2 or it will lock up.
The 2 button reset worked for me the 1st time. Thanks
I was deleting mail from my IPAD 2 when everything froze.I went to turn it off and now the spinning shutdown icon is still spinning. So far it's been about 3 hours and it's still spinning. I can't shut it down. I plugged my Ipad2 into the computer to see if that would help and it did not. I have read similar problems on this. Was anything resolved?
Have you tried holding both the power button and the square button at the same time for about 5-10 seconds? That worked for me when mine kept spinning.
Had the same problem. Resetting and all the other ideas didn't work. What finally solved the problem was this: Go to settings; then go to Safari. Clear the history, cookies and cache. The whole ipad then functioned normally.
yes!!!!! Thank You after loveing this ipad2 it has driven me crazy today, especially when i found you could not contact technical support till monday> i tried to sinc it on my computer itunes said error on ipad, could not stop the spinning icon or turn on or off . amazed when i read your post, hold down the start stop square button on top of the ipad and the round start button on the bottom of the ipad front. hold them down together for ten+ seconds and its back to normal then sinc it up on the pc.
Thanks for the info. This worked when nothing else would.
