Hi there,

I've been having issues with this for some time now - Macbook Pro crashing/black screening with the only option being to power off and reboot.  My last error Report came up as follows:

I've no idea what the problem is: Previously, I was experiencing crashes when the following 2 entries featured in the crash report:

(a) com.rogueamoeba.hermes

(b) com.Cycling74.driver Soundflower

They were linked to (a) AudioHijack program, and (b) Max 5 (an Ableton live-related program) - so I deleted all the files I could find for each of them, but the report generated still included the above antries - then I re-installed OSX using the install disc that came with my Macbook Pro.

The entries seem to have disappeared, but I'm still getting crashes, especially when I try to open Time Machine.  It's driving me mad and I've got work to be getting on with AAARRGH!

If anyone can please help/throw some light on this, it'd be most appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

TD.

Message was edited by: KingPro By the way, I have a Macbook Pro (mid 2010) - Just installed updates to version 10.6.7 .  There is also a WD Passport 500GB ext. hard drive attached (used as time machine), and recently added a WD MyBook 2TB ext. hard drive for storage - both via a Laser 7-port USB hub.  Not sure if either of these would come into the equation when considering the frequent crashes, but I thought it might be useful information for those in the know...

It seems that the common denominator is the nVidia graphics driver. I've started experiencing problems only a week ago, before that I can't recall having this problem. That seems to suggest that this is not a hardware issue, though I have replaced my RAM a few months ago. I would like to run the Apple Hardware Test, but I don't have the install dvd with me right now, does anybody know how to perform the test without the DVD?

For me the panics are not so common, they happen at most 2 times a day and sometimes not even that so I'm able to work, but I'd like to have this resolved nonetheless.

    @miroz

Dude, I would say 2 a day is still absolutely ridiculous considering we should be having NONE.

Unfortunately I get at least more than that and it saddens me.

You don't need the disk to perform a hardware test as far as I'm aware. Just boot and keep holding "d" before the apple logo appears. Although if you're having the same issue as the rest of us, my bet is that the test will come up all positive and no faults detected.

I hear ya danny - this is looking more and more like a nVidia graphics driver issue from what people are saying, but there doesn't appear to be an update available from nVidia's website yet (not that you'd be able to get it - nVidia's install package brings up an 'unsupported' error message upon use...).

I'll be taking mine in to a service centre later this week and demanding they sort it out whilst it's still on warranty.

I installed Quartz Debug at that seems to have limited the frequency with which it was happening, yet I still had a KP last night when I tried accessing Channel 4's (UK) 4oD site section...

COME ON APPLE TECHXSPERTS - WHERE ARE YOU?? WE NEED HELP!!

    KingPro,

    Have you seen this page?

    http://thetahas.com/2011/02/05/finally-solved-my-i7-macbook-pro-crashes/

This person claims downgrading to 10.6.4 will fix the issues.  I personally can't do that because I need 10.6.7 for the latest XCode and iOS SDKs.  I've tried ad nauseum to downgrade the Gefore/NVIDIA kexts to no avail (I do not suggest this unless you know what you're doing as you could render your mac unbootable).

Let us know what the "Genius" bar has to say

    Thanks,

    Danny

Still happening for me ... just ran the Apple Hardware Test (extensively which only took 30 min thankfully) ... it reported "no problems".

Still experiencing crashes at a rate of 5-10 a day.  Happens usually when XCode/Photoshop are running.

Anyway we can file this with apple as an official issue?

I fixed it by uninstalling the MS Office 2011

Dunno...  But it was annoying me too.  Since I uninstalled, it hasnt froze ever since.

I too have ms office '11 installed, though I haven been freezing for the last few days. Is it possible at all that ms office would somehow interfere with the graphics driver? I highly doubt that, but I wouldn't be surprised since it is from redmond....

    @Benjalamelami @miroz:

The issue we are seeing is not a "freeze" but a sudden "black screen".  Also I do not have MS Office 2011 installed ( I have 2008 though )

    Thanks for your input though.

Yeah, I removed them both (2008 & 2011).  The Ms Office where working good till 10.6.4 update.  Till then, they started rebooting the **** machine

Ok I've been running in Safe Mode for the past hour or two and NOT A SINGLE CRASH.  I've been intentionally running hot too ... Adobe Photoshop, XCode, etc ... are all up and running well.

The only odd thing is Safari and Chrome will "hang" on pages they normally have no problems loading.  i.e. Gmail.  Chrome will eventually give an error message that allows you to close the window.

So this definitely has something to do with the kexts that are loaded in normal mode.  Anyway ... food for thought.

Firefox runs perfectly though.  Not sure if there's something Safari/Chrome specifically use like Quartz or something that is perhaps the root of these issues.

    Guys.

I experienced, after a few days, the first freeze again without the MS Office suite (neither 2008 nor 2011) installed.  The kinda freeze that actually leaves the black screen and leaves no option but to hard reboot the machine by holding the power button.

Now, I know its not hardware.  I did put the original version of MacOX  (10.6.3) and decided not to upgrade it.  So far, It seems to be working like a charm.  My MBP is a 2010 core i7 with 8 GB DDR3.

I do believe that the Office suite somehow, with the upgraded software MacOS X interfere much more. But there seems to be more software that bugs the OS when fully updated (I had 10.6.7).

Anyhow... I'll post again if any problems.  I currently dont miss anything from the 10.6.7, and I feel more secure with my beautiful MacBook and I am running the MS suite again.

    Hope this helps

I took dannybtran's advice and looked at the article which recommends sticking with 10.6.4 at the most - no crashes so far.  I still haven't managed to take my macbook to the techies, but I have a feeling they'll just plug into diagnostics and irritate me with a distinct lack of knowledge about what the real problem is...

I can only assume the same as others, that 10.6.7 is somehow interferring with the nvidia graphics/associated kernels - I'm not sure what we miss out on/is different from 10.6.7, but whatever, it's worth not having if it means my super-powerful-and-very-expensive Macbook Pro i7 4GB doesn't crash every few hours. Ridiculous.

Hopefully they'll resolve this in the next update if they issue one.  I may still take mine to the store and ask them what they propose to do about it.

See, if it is a software issue (unless the ASD has failed), in particular with the graphics, I wonder why it's only present on a few machines? Surely if this was a widespread issue there'd be heaps of people all over the net. The weird thing is, I was having this problem over a fresh install (updated), with nothing else but chrome and steam.

Also, for me anyway, the crashes are more likely to happen when waking straight after sleep.

Still getting a few kernel panics a day.

    I has a sad.
