connecting to itunes

i download books to my windows 7 computer, to tranfer into ipod touch. When i try to tranfer itunes doesn't recognize the ipod to make the tranfer. The only way i can do it is by re-installing itunes. I have to keep doing this every time. can you please help me try to figure this out...Thank you
