To Install or Not To install Linux

Hello All

I read awhile back that install Linux on a Mac could petentially damage the had drive. Can anyone confirm or refute? I know this is not a Linux forum, but the Debian based Ubuntu Linux does have an Intel Mac 64bit distro. Just curious.
