iTunes freezes when syncing my iPad!

Since I did the updates of iTunes to 10.2.2 and iPad iOS update to 4.3.2 Saturday all went to pieces.

My iPad cannot sync with my Windows 7 PC no more. iTunes freezes all the time at "preparing to sync apps"...

I have re-installed iTunes already four times. Reset iPad as well and still no luck!

What is the solution?

iPad, iOS 4.3.2, Windows 7 PC

It would be wonderful if Apple used other ways to help promote their competition, than refusing to fix seven-almost-eight year old bugs in their software.

The only way to add an MP3 so that I can play it on my iPad is to 'sync' it with a Desktop/Laptop running iTunes. Yet that fails to actually be a solution when Apple refuses to fix a problem with their software.

It's like they break their own programs just to help their competitors. And if that is true, there are better ways to do that... At least for customers, there are better and less expensive ways.

The vaporware may explain this perception; However, on multiple instances Apple seems to have 'devolved' and gotten worse as a company since Mr. Jobs passed away.

HI Jim,

Yes, that was my thought and problem as well... Nothing to be found when searching Google or the Apple website.

I have spent over 8 hours to get it all working again because I was so flabagasted that this happened. All was working flawlessly all the time. Now I am stuck because I DO use my iPad all the time!

Hi there,

I have been surfing around the forum to see if there's been any feedback on this issue and none. I'm on an Intel Mac 10.6.7 and have just updated iTunes to 10.2.2 and ipad 1 to 4.3.2. and have worked through the sync process one step at a time to see where the issue is and have discovered for me iTunes crashes during step 4 when syncing photos. I have found a quick work around is to turn off the sync photos option. Not ideal but the ipad will then sync music and apps. However in doing this it removes the actual photos from your ipad and only keeps the reference files which means you can't actually see your photos anymore. This happens even if you do check the Keep Photos on your iPad option from the popup window when you uncheck photo sync. It;s either an itunes issue or a 4.3.2 iOS issue for iPad 1. Either way it's a total FAIL from Apple. :-P

just in case Support Guys are looking in trying to find a common factor for the faults....

Computer Gigabyte UD7 motherboard, intel i7 970 CPU, 24Gb Ram, 2 Sata 3 Velociraptor Drives, Water Cooled, SLI EVGA GTX 580 hydrocopper Graphics, 8 GB Dedicated Fash Drive Ready Boost, Tagan 1200w Power supply, Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1 + Updates , Itunes 10.2.2.12

iPad 2 with latest iOS updates

Standard 17" MacBook Pro OSX Snow Leopard, plus all updates.

Not tried it on the Server or the 4 other computers here....

Plug the thing in and it starts to charge on any computer / wall socket, it's only the connection to iTunes that's iffy!!!

I am glad to hear that I am not alone...I have been wrestling with this exact same thing for a week now and have decided that it is an iTunes problem. My iPad simply won't sync. It freezes when trying to sync music. I updated to the latest iTunes 4.2.2 and it has not synced since. I would pay good money for a third party simple sync program that worked. I am running windows xp sp3. Please Apple...fix this soon since I cannot sync anything onto my iPad...very disappointing. Thanks. -Ger

Add my name to the list. I spoke to Apple and they seem ignorant of the problem. Not only do I have this problem with my ipad but iPhone as well. The problem did not start until I did the upgrade.

Also I have another weird problem. My iPhone shows that it is over-capacity, yet I do not have any movies checked to sync. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the iTunes, Bonjour and QuickTime software.

I think I'm having the same issue. I have a Windows 7 home built PC with a modern Intel Quad 4 processor. My issue is that occasionally when I plug in my iPad 2, it doesn't recognize the iPad and iTunes becomes unresponsive. If I unplug the iPad then iTunes starts responding. Rebooting the PC usually fixes it but I've also had it lock up when transfering files for VLC. I also get the message in the battery status area of the iPad indicating that the iPad is not charging. I've tried every USB port on the computer but haven't been able to resolve either issue. I do notice that if I leave it plugged in, after it goes to sleep it will charge but very slowely. However, charging isn't an issue. The main issue is the inability for iTunes to recognize the iPad. If anyone has any suggestions I'd very much appreciate it.

Hi:

Just a small technical tidbit here. The "Not Charging" indicator is incorrect. I don't remember where I saw it but when the iPad is plugged into a USB device, there is not enough current to to put the iPad in charge mode, yet in fact it is charging especially in sleep mode. To properly charge the iPad, it must be plugged into a wall adaptor to supply 4+ watts of power, which the USB port is incapable of supplying. When I saw this I felt applied to the original iPads. The same must be true of the iPad2's. Just let it go to sleep.

Anyway this is a deliberate design flaw by Apple that is universal to all iPads so you can scratch that from your list of concerns. I hope this helps. I wish I had an answer for syncing issue but I don't.

Same problem here, iPad won't sync on pc running Windows 7, 64 bit. Tried going back to older versions of iTunes but can't run them with the 4.3.2 update and now my laptop that runs Windows XP Professional and had worked fine with no issues, has stopped syncing with the ipad since updates. When I start sync iTunes says "syncing step 1 of 1, it used to be step 1 of 4.

Monday night (May 2nd) I uninstalled all of iTunes 10.2.2, including the Apple Updater, Apple Mobile Device Support, Apple Application Support, and Quicktime. I then reinstalled iTunes 10.2.0, and tried to sync my iPad. still froze iTunes. I updated to iTunes 10.2.1. Still forze up. I shut down for the night.

Last night (May 3rd) I powered up the system, and took a chanceand plugged in my iPad. iTunes started right up, and started syncing! I disconnected the iPad, and reconnected it. Everything was working fine.

I'm going to stay with iTunes 10.2.1 until given a definitave reason to upgrade.

Folks,

I ended up trying everything and ultimately got it to work yesterday. I uninstalled my antivirus program (CA antivirus with firewall) and ITunes started Syncing with no problem. I have now gone back to PC Tools AV with Spyware protection and it continues to work. I don't dare change anything either on ITunes or AV at this point. Sadly Apple makes a great hardware product but ITunes could not suck any more than it already does. Until they change ITunes and/or make the IPad connect to a PC like every other device on the planet (plug and play), I cannot recommend an IPad to anyone else. Thes past two weeks simply have been too frustrating for a $700 device. Thanks. -Geremy
