Do you have the Perian component package and the QT 7 Player also installed. Basically, the file title suggests the movie was compressed using the XviD video compression format format (which is not natively compatible with QT) and placed in an AVI file container. To be able to play such a file requires an XviD playback component be installed for QT to use. The Perian component package contains support for a number of audio and video compression formats commonly used in the AVI file container but be sure to read the Perian warnings regarding known component conflicts. In addition, since QT X is primarily limited to newer compression formats, having the QT 7 Player installed to handle older "legacy" formats may be of benefit as a file not playable in QT X may be playable in QT 7.

Hold on... advice to someone downloading from 1337x !!!

Until I saw your comment and googled the term, I had no idea that this was a "downloaded" file. I assumed the "1337x" reference was to dimensions/resolution and Noir referred to genre. (I.e., I use similar notations the differentiate files compressed for TV playback comparisons.) In any case, the advice is the same irrespective of the source.

er, isn't it illegal to download movies ?

Not necessarily. Thousands of movies are probably downloaded daily as legal purchases from such vendors as iTunes. Thousands more are available for free in the public domain, open source/community videos listings, and under Creative Commons Licensing. In short, there are many legal sources of downloadable content and you should not automatically jump to the conclusion that everyone is a crook.

Righto !

Have a look at this... http://1337x.org/user/Noir/

then you will see and understand that I did not jump to a conclusion. Noir is a known user handle and anyone who understands licensing would have heard of this person if they follow the piracy debates.

CCL is a total different bag. And a very, very detailed bag that I have many debates about due to my time in the design industry.

I see what you mean. However, as neither XviD/AVI content nor torrent downloading are my "my cup of tea," was unfamiliar with both the site and individual. My work flow targets mobile and TV content only. Am more interested in the eventual archive of my entire video library so as to safely store the source media and prevent further damage by visiting grandchildren. Noted in your profile that you identify yourself as a multi-TB storage user. Was wondering if you had any experience with the Drobo line of drive enclosures. Wanted a moderate performance, large capacity protected storage system with the ability to grow with my needs over time. Decided to try the DroboPro with four 2-TB drives as initial setup but one drive was DOA and I am awaiting its replacement to finish copying my iTunes library from a higher performance/lower capacity CalDigit VR system. Like both systems so far but have not been unable to find any good statistics regarding the MTBF of the enclosures themselves. Any words of wisdom from your end? (You reach me directly using profile info if you want to take the conversation outside the forum.)

Will drop you a line on mail.... and no worries re the AVI etc as I keep on eye on the tech media re these issues also. It is nice to have a debate re things.

Just how big is this library ! ?

I looked at the Drobo system a while ago and it is good but had a thought re a different kinda solution on this all that can grow as well. The links will be for UK sites but they do have US counterparts.
