Messed Up Mail (IMAP transfers)

Hi,

Yesterday whilst using my Graphics Pen/Tablet I seemed to have Clicked and Dragged one iMAP folder to another.

Unfortunately this was my Google Mail (All Mail) Folder to one associated with my Web site.

This creates a Folder on the second IMAP account called (Google Mail) All Mail and it started copying 17,000+ emails over whilst I was busy posting on ASC.

I thought I had stopped it.

I deleted the Extra Folder and thought that was it.

Now I am getting this message every few seconds.

User uploaded file

I tried receating the Folder called (Google MAil) All Mail in the second IMAP Account but I am having trouble with the parathenses

(I added All Mail as the Folder name but I can't change it to (Google Mail) All Mail - it will not stick).

I tried adding them as Sqaue brackets with no luck.
As soon as the next pop up appears the name Changes back.

The Email that gets moved to the said INBox "On My Mac" is alwasy the same one once I dismiss the Message.

This is beginning to drive me crazy as they say.

It seems I can't do anything in Mail until this is sorted.

Well, quit Mail for sure, use Webmail to chack and/or add/move the folders in WebMail.

Then disconnect from the Internet, start Mail & see if you can correct it while offline.

Not certain, but this can fix myriad Mail problems...

Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move these folder & file to the Desktop.

Move this Folder to the Desktop...

/Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/

Move this file to the Desktop...

/Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index

Reboot.

Not clear here, but did you try to make that box "On my Mac" then drag it to the Gmail box?

Hi BDAqua,

I tried to recreate the file I deleted thinking that would stop it in the first Instance. (In the Website IMAP folder)

I thought it needed to be called All Mail and it accepted that.

Then I spotted what I thought were ( ) brackets around the Google Mail bit in the message and tried adding them.

While I was posting I saw they were Square Brackets and tried that.

If I turn Off the Google Mail IMAP I still get the messages.

If I turn On the Google Mail and turn Off the WebSite one The Messages stop.

I did turn Mail Off and went to the Google Mail Site and deleted several items (Apple Discussions Subscription emails of the same date) to make sure the errant one was sorted.

I still got the message.

I have had the Activity Panel open and tried clicking Stop there but with no luck.

One of the messages still says it is trying to fetch all 17000+ Headers.

This was not a move I was planning.

I did not even realise until I got a New Mail Alert that Mail was doing something.

I just need to stop It trying to move my Email History to the other IMAP server.

I will try the Safe Boot and Repairs and see what I get.

Hi BDAqua,

DId the Safe Boot and moved the two folders.

The first was last Modified in 2008 but I moved it anyway.

The Second did say it was Modified today.

I then Rebooted.

Started Mail.

It "Imported" Gmail. whilst showing me the Start Up Screen

When it was done I seemed to be in the same position I was in before (I still had the second IMAP Account Off Line)

When I turned It On again I got the same message

Since then, whilst typing this message has created 64 70 entries in the "On My Mac" spot now called INBOX.[Google Mail].All Mail.

I will check my Web Site to see if they have a Web Mail point (I Don't think they have)

Ralph,

Can you confirm whether the folder you inadverdantly created shows up via webmail access -- I doubt that it does, and I suspect some interference with the IMAP accounts and the universal index, along with trying to do a sync from the cached account folders that cannot be carried out. Force a reindexing by deleting the Envelope Index. With IMAP or Exchange accounts, forcing reindexing requires removing the account folders. See:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mail/4.0/en/14019.html

This procedure is the same for 10.5.8, btw.

Hi BDAqua and Ernie,

I will try to answer both sets of questions.

These are the Folders Mail Shows for that Account (Although I could not Right/Control Click it)

User uploaded file

I have found that the people I use for my WebSite do have a page you can login to view mail.

On that page the All Mail folder does not exist.

When I have this account Enabled I have tried changing the name with no luck.

On the web page I tried creating the [Google Mail] All Mail name. This stuck but the Mail App does not show that Folder. (I was not logged in via Mail when I did this).

(I will edit ro remove the Brackets as I did that first thing today)

In Mail Preferences > Accounts > Advanced this Webiste IMAP is set to Compact Mail Boxes Automatically where as my Gmail one is not.

Not sure if that has a bearing. (Will wait for advice)

As to the Force Indexing by deleting the Envelope index.

I did that before as per BDQAqua's Instructions.

It did the Gmail one (I Presume as it was Enabled before)

I presume it did not touch the Website one as it was not Enabled.

I will repeat with both Enabled.

I have read the link and have started work on it. I presume this is the folder removal you spoke of and not anywhere else ?

Will post back soon.

Hi,

This is a lot longer than the first time.

It siad there were 21000+ to index/Import but that only took a couple of minutes

When Mail Came up properly both accounts In-boxes were marked Off Line.

I clicked both to On and I started to get an "Incoming Mail" progress bar.

It listed over 3000 the first time and 2994 on a second.

Checking random folders though sees to have all the mail.

The Website Account has picked up the Named folder [Google Mail] All Mail as I have not changed the name yet.

I have had no Pop-up messages Yeayyyy !!.

I will wait to mark the Thread until Mail has finished what it is doing and I know for certain.

Thanks for the Info and time so far.

Thanks Ernie,

That seems to have done the trick.

Seems it needed those IMAP folder moved out as well as the Envelope Index.

Thanks again.

Who is the provider of the IMAP account. and that you are infact dealing with an IMAP account? I ask to assertain whether it is likely that all messages have remained on the server. With some you could merely Remove the IMAP account, quit and relaunch Mail and add it back, and have it properly access and reindex all the messages, having repaired the Index file at the time you removed the account.

But if you also require that one or more POP accounts be reindexed, you may need further instruction. I am about to leave the computer shortly for serveral hours. When I return, I can fully explain methods and filenames to look for.
