What can a person do with this information? I have been asked for my UDID to receive a contest prize and dont want to be scammed or hacked but I really know nothing about a UDID or what a person could do with it? It is a contest I entered and not something out of the blue but I am leary about giving out this info without knowing more. Any advice?

See this page: 'The UDID is a 40-character string unique to each iPhone/iPod touch. The UDID is needed for ad-hoc distribution applications. Typically you will need to e-mail the UDID to the application provider, so they can generate an ad-hoc mobile profile for your iPhone/iPod touch.'
Beta applications won't have Apple approval and so won't run on a tester's device: the UDID is used to get an authorisation from Apple to allow this. Whether there's any security issue I don't know, though I don't see how since even if someone obtains your number they can't use it to run an app on their device; and even if someone created a malicious app you would still have to install it (something you should always exercise caution about if the source isn't completely trusted).
thank you for the reply! I wasnt sure if they could do anything with that number, just wanted to be sure it wouldnt somehow give them access to credit card info and the like. It is an ingame prize likeabird so that is why it involves my ipod touch and I guess that is why they need my UDID in the first place?
@pepperpot Your question was not answered, Ex: If you were to now give me your UDID & you owned the app SevenSwords. I could log into your acc due to you having checked "Save password" On the square box before log in (As so everyone does). If any other apps asked if you wanted your password saved (on the devices UDID), it would be saved to it, meaning if I got a hold of it & downloaded the app on an iPod/iPhone/iPad, I would have your password saved on that UDID, allowing me to do as I please (Deleting your acc or worse, saying things you would normally not say). Now that is not me & I would never do such. I consider only giving it out if you are a beta tester.

Please disregard the "&amp", I'm on an iPodTouch and it seems the and symbol is not correctly coded. Aside from that, another great ex: TextForFree auto logs in users w/o a password or username due to the UDID of the device. Same conclusion.
hi i just installed iOS5 (beta) and i'm stuck on "Could Not Activate iPhone" i have my UDID but i dont know where i will register this in order to activate my iPhone (beta iOS5) via any channel.

Hi all, really quick / basic question: what information does a UDID number tell about the owner of the iphone or ipad. For example, can someone associate a UDID number with the person who registered the iPad in the first place? What happens when you sell an iPAD? Thanks
The UDID is just a unique identifier for the device. Yes it can be associated the person who registered it. In the past, some apps used the UDID to associate the app with the device. However, app now prohibits using the UDID for that purpose. I conclude that now the UDID is really the same as the serial number except more unique. There is nothing to prohibit tow different manufacturers from using the same SN but a UDID is unique.
Thanks for your prompt response - appreciated. One final question if I may......why would GMail (Google) collect a UDID when signing up for an Gmail account (perhaps they don't, I was told they do).
I assume only Apple and not Google can associate the UDID with the registered iPad user?
It could be that Google uses the UDID to identify the device you sign into. You can setup Gmail so you get notified if a different/new device is used to sign into Google. Google uses it for security.
