Repeated Error: Disk is too slow. (Record) (-10005)

Hello brilliant forum users,

I'm using a brand new mac mini with all of the software updated. It's got 2GB of RAM.

I am recording spoken word through a mixer, onto one track (male basic).

There are no other tracks.

I have no other applications open, and the computer has had a fresh boot.

I am getting this error repeatedly, intermittently, with no apparent cause:

Disk is too slow. (Record)

(-10005)

After googling and reading up, I have done the following:

  1. Made sure FileVault is off (it was).
  2. Turned off time machine (I had it on).
  3. In the energy saver preference, deselected 'put hard disk(s) to sleep when possible'.

Still, the error occurred.

Then, I decided to record to my 500GB external (backup) drive, which is connected via usb (I do not have a firewire external drive). I thought, surely this will fix the problem. I made sure time machine was disabled.

Still, the error occurred.

It is totally random, happens at 2 minutes, 20 minutes, or not at all.

I have recording audio resolution set at 'good'.

I am recording via an audio-in (3.5mm I think?) aux cable from an OUT on the mixer.

It seems that I should call apple, but I am at a meditation center in Thailand, and the time difference makes it difficult, not to mention that the computer is in the meditation hall, which makes phone calls difficult.

So, I turn to the trusted experience of YOU!

Thank you very much!

Most appreciatively,

Lizzy

Hello Lizzy,

Not unlike meditation, there are several levels you could explore in order to achieve Garageband bliss:

First, you could try the "regular things" - repair disk permissions using the Disk Utility application, trash GB preferences, and trash your cache folder.

If that doesn't work, I'd try creating a new user account and see if GB works better there.

Failing that, you could try uninstalling and reinstalling GB (search the forum for "complete uninstall Garageband").

Failing that, it may be that GB is not the problem, even though it's manifesting in GB. There may actually be something wrong with your computer and you might have to contact Apple.

Good luck!

A slightly unsatisfying, but I'm sure helpful, answer.

I have done all of the "regular things" - amazing how many permissions had to be repaired after only being on for a couple weeks! - and will let you know if there is any progress.

I have also been getting this one intermittently while playing back - sometimes while playing back only one track. Don't know if it's related.

Part of the project was not played

This project has too many real instrument tracks to be played in real-time.

To optimize performance, see the 'Optimizing GarageBand performance' page in GB Help.

hmmm.. that doesn't sound right - and may suggest a software issue.

Have you tried creating a new user account (go to System Preferences, Accounts, and add another account with the "+" sign) and using Garageband from a new account?

Or if that's not working, do a complete uninstall of Garageband...

• trash GB receipts (at the hard drive level)

• trash your Caches folder (at the user level)

• trash all GB preferences (at the user level)

• trash the GB application

... then reinstall Garageband from scratch?

Hope this is helpful!

Update: My gb reinstall didn't solve the problem. I called apple. They did some testing and concluded it had two possible causes: 1. A conflict with audacity (even though it wasn't running, some processes were conflicting) and 2. I hadn't uninstalled correctly (really rediculously complicated if you ask me). I uninstalled audacity and another audio program I had installed (Cubase, just to be extra safe) and correctly uninstalled GB and reinstalled, which is quite the process. I had to reinstall GB, which takes a while, then separately reinstall iPhoto (from the same software disk that came with the comp) and do lots of updating - twice for iPhoto. In any case, I haven't had the error for a week, so finger's crossed!

Thanks all. And kudus to Apple support. Always buy Apple Care, that's my opinion. I didn't think they'd have much for me but instead they installed some logging software and analyzed it for me to determine the source of the problem. I was transferred to a super-expert fairly quickly. My only gripe is that they don't offer international support, so they wouldn't call me back if we got disconnected. I find this distasteful and discriminatory. Why does someone who buys a $1,500 macbook in Thailand deserve poorer customer service than someone who buys the same machine for the same price in the US?
