when i open imovie, it freezes. why, and what should i do?

I have a very important project to do for school and have to give it back next week. It's on iMovie, and it's a 54minutes video. Since yesterday, I have a problem. I don't know if because it's too big, but when I open it, it freezes, and the little rainbow turns and turns and turns..... And because of that projects, I can't start any other project, and I can't go on any other project. That really freaks me out. PLEASE HELP ME!

Try this:

1. Quit iMovie

2. Restart the Mac

3. Repair permissions (open Disk Utility in your Applications/Utilities folder), select Macintosh HD and choose repair Permissions from the buttons displayed

4. Move iMovie preferences (or trash them). They're at <your usenrame>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iMovieApp.pList (the name might vary slightly, depending, but will always start com.apple.iMovie...)

5. Delete the iMovie cache (in <your username>/Library/Caches, called com.apple.iMovieApp or similar. Delete the whole folder

6. Restart the Mac.

Hopefully, that will fix it

HI Nick, I seem to have a similar problem, iMovie worked just fine until I loaded the recent update. Now it crashes before opening and if I re- open it, my (MacBook pro) freezes. I just tried your suggestion, as that

had helped another ILife problem, but the problem is still there. Any other thoughts? Many thanks

It probably is not the same problem, but my iMovie '11 would fail to restart in the fashion you describe. I spent a lot of time trying different things, including re-installing both iLife and Snow Leopard, creating alternate users, emptying caches and preference files, etc.

The problem was solved with lots of help from an Apple senior tech. In the Library folder of the System (not the user Library file) in the folder "QuickTime" were some component files for the program "Flip4Mac." When those files were trashed, iMovie worked fine.

Again, your problem may be different, but it might be worthwhile to check.

It sounds as if there's some cr*p left over from a crash. This is especially likely if you don't leave your MBP running overnight, since that's when maintenance scripts, designed to clean up, will run.

Try downloading Onyx ( http://www.titanium.free.fr/ ), a free utility for stuff like this. When you run it, you can (a) run all the maintenance scripts and (b) clear all caches, which might help

Thank you both,

I tried to find a Flip4Mac in the systems library/QuickTime, nothing there...

Nick, what is a MBP? Is it really best to keep the computer running all night? I usually turn it off. I'll download Onyx. and see what happens. I haven't got a new version of DiskWarrior and haven't known what to use instead.

MBP = MacBookPro

There are some automated scripts built into the Mac that run overnight to perform maintenance tasks, such as cleaning out any leftover temporary files, emptying some caches and so on. If your machine is never on overnight, the scripts don't get a chance to run, and there's no simple way to tell the Mac to run them. That's one of the things Onyx does. There are daily, weekly and monthly scripts.

It may be that something that needs cleaning out is causing your problem.

I hate to bug you, but.... I've tried downloading Onyx several times, and can't seem to get any further than

1.7 mb downloaded. Let it run all night and this morning there was an error message. I just downloaded

a new FireFox update that's about twice the size, in a jiffy. Is there another route I could take?

What does the error message say, exactly?

Tip:

M = Mega = Million and B = byte = 8 bits

m = milli = 1/1000 and b = bit

So it should say 1.7 MB

You can't find them va a search - ypu have to navigate directly.

If you're on Lion or Mountain Lion, open a Finder window, then click on "Go" on the menu bar, and hold down the Option (alt) key. The Library folder will appear in the drop down list of locations. Open it, open the Preferences subfolder, and look for the file. It'll be there
