Thanks for this discussion. I used the Aluminum cases myself and got different results. I agree with FruitNinja that the degradation probably comes from the metallic band on the side of the iPhone being covered in metal cases. I bought the JustCase Metallica case and found no problem. Please take a look at a blog I wrote. It used field test method to prove my opinion. http://electronicfan.wordpress.com/2011/11/04/metal-case-and-dropped-calls/

Do not waster your money. Aluminum cases are problably the worst case you can get and will degrade the signal on the iphone 4. In fact it will degrade signal by 1 to 2 bars. So if you are in an area where you have only one of two bars, you will have a lot of dropped calls. Save your money and stay away from metal cases.

I don't think you want a case made of metal completely. It's proven to degrade signals, Phone, 3G and Wifi. For iPhone 4 and 4S, the Antenna is on the side metal ring, so you definitely don't want to cover those with metal. I understand how guys like their gadgets to be all metal. I'm one of them. I bought this JustCase Metallica case http://www.amazon.com/JustCase-Metallica-Verizon-Brushed-Aluminum/dp/B005LT6T3M, which is made of some synthetic material, but it looks like it's metal.
