iPhone 4 silent switch is not working properly

Just today I've noticed that my silent switch doesn't quite apply to all apps. This is a new development. Previously, nearly every app would (YouTube and Netflix, did not, for example) obey silent mode.

The switch is clearly in silent mode and when the phone is switched into silent mode, the "slashed bell" appears and the phone vibrates. This leads me to believe it's not a hardware issue.

So far, I've noticed the following apps obey the switch setting:

  • Mail
  • Phone
  • Messages
  • Notes

Keyboard clicks and lock sounds are not audible when the switch is set to "silent".

The following apps do not obey the switch setting:

  • Words with Friends
  • Angry Birds
  • Kik Messenger

Suffice to say, it seems like it's only 3rd party apps that are ignoring the switch setting.

Rebooting the device seems to help for a little while. This is not predictably reproducible so far as I've seen.

Has anyone else observed this happening?

Yes, I've seen the same thing happen. Embedded audio still plays in Safari, even when the phone is set to silent mode and the ringer is manually turned all the way down. I discovered this accidentally, when I browsed to a website that had embedded audio, and sound came blasting out of the speaker. The silent mode switch doesn't appear to actually mute everything.
