Q: Get eMac to run in Classic Mode without system disks?

I purchased an eMac G4, off the Internet, with 10.4.11 installed. I received no system disks with that computer. Unfortunately, I found that it does not run in Classic Mode. I understand that eMacs came with their own specific system disks--I have a copy of a 9.2 system disk. Is there a way to install the files necessary to run in Classic Mode without acquiring the eMac-specific system disks (if they are even available) for the purpose?

Another problem: While following some bad advice, I dragged the system folder from the 9.2 disk onto my eMac's desktop. As you can guess, it was unsuccessful in getting it to run in Classic Mode. When I tried to drag this system folder to the Trash, I would get a message that said it could not be placed in the Trash because it was in use. I attempted to rename the folder, but still received the same message.

HOW CAN I GET THIS FOLDER OFF THE DAMNED COMPUTER???

Hey, thanks, that's a cool little App I've never heard of before... trying it now!

Yes, and a good price too.   compared to its competitors.

Just a not of caution. Do prescribe it to find files of a decent size say 100K, else it will uncover a zillion deleted 4K web artifacts. Unless you want to see them too.

The scenario that you desribed with the Burn Folder sounds quite possible.

The files are not in the Trash and don't show up when I use the Find command. The eMac does not have Internet access now. It seems like the easiest way to get on the Internet to get the cleverfiles program would be to hook the eMac into the network hub in my house using an Ethernet cable. Does this sound right?

I was backing up the .band files because I wanna install system 10.4.4 from the disks I  just bought. Getting cleverfiles might be a little time consuming. How risky is it for me to install the system without having backed up the .band files?

Hi Ed. If the .band files have been accidentally deleted, and they seem lost because you have had a look and can't find them, doing any upgrade isn't going to get them back.

Wait until you can get a copy of that software and see if it can find them and undelete them. Also be aware that

the more you use your computer the less chance there is of file recovery.

Another Internet question:  I work on a Mac Pro that at times has very slow Internet access using Safari.  I'm still running 10.4.4 because I use some old music programs that my school won't pay to update.  I thought maybe using Firefox instead of Safari might speed up my wait time on things loading on You Tube, but 10.4.4 can only support Firefox 3.5.  Mozilla's site says that they no longer support 3.5, which I presume means that they don't update it re: viruses, etc.  However, I would only be using Firefox about 30 minutes a week for You Tube watching with a student.  How risky does it sound to use Firefox 3.5 for 30 min. a week re: viruses?  I guess I could beef up my virus protection.  What would you suggest for a good free virus protection program?

Using Firefox 3.5 in that circumstance would be fine. The problem is not actually with viruses per se, but malware in general, so I wouldn't bother running an anti-virus program. Malware affecting Macs is out there but I'd still rate it as 'rare' compared to running an unprotected Windows machine which I believe get infected instantly!
